I got DirecTv recently and love it. Got it b/c I got a new TV and Insight had no HD cable out where I live. Got the basic package, "Choice" and get NFL Network, ESPNNews but the two stations that aren't included are FSN, no Reds games , and no Golf Channel.

They said by September 1 they should be up to 70 HD channels.

Best HD availability of any cable provider.

Time Warner is a crap cable provider. They gripe about having to add any channels what-so-ever and are always making excuses for their poor quality product. Satelite providers offer way in terms of quality, quantity, and variety. Switch to satelite ASAP. You will be happy you did. I am. My bill actually is less now that it was with Time Warner and I get more channels and fewer excuses than I did with Time Warner.

Actually just looked it up and it's closer to $70.

Cable Roadrunner is one of the main reasons I've stayed w/ TW, and called them couple months ago and told them $130 a month wasn't competitive, and they changed it to $100 (HBO, Cable Internet, 2 boxes, DVR, On-Demand).

I have DirecTV and will believe that 70 HD channel count when I see it happen, not a moment before.

It is satellite, so the answer is no. You are better off hooking up with your local telecom for DSL or similar.

Totally clueless question about Directv/Dish... Do I need a box on every TV in order to watch any channels? Or is it like digital cable where I can get the basic cable without the box, extra channels with one?

Directv is a group of marketing geniuses. There won't be anything close to 70 HD channels in existence by Sept--maybe not even by 2009. Also, Dish, Comcast, FIOS, and U-verse have 3-4 times as many HD channels as Directv.

You do not need a box for every tv with dishnet. Their DVR has 3 tuners and a 300GB HD, it allows you to watch 2 different programs on 2 separate televisions. They give you an IR remote for the first tv and an UHF/RF remote for the second tv. With directv you will need a box for every tv.

On DishNetwork's they have quite a few more HD channels that look non-PPV, but I'm exactly sure that stuff like Family Room HD, Kung Fu HD, Monsters HD, Treasure HD would be worthy of a switch. To the first part, I'm certainly not advising anyone to switch to any company. I was just advising Thump that directv is full of sh!t.
Switch providers if they meet your needs and pricing right now, not some bs future promises that can never be kept.

To the second part, I have worked for Verizon, ATT, and Comcast and have always known what the competitors offer in terms of technology, equipment, and programming. Not that you care, , but right now I work for a company that casts platinum, gold, and silver for jewelers. So, that OSU education has come in pretty handy.
