The Big Ten Network and Insight Communications have agreed to terms on a contract, a source familiar with the negotiations said this afternoon, clearing the way for Insight cable subscribers in central Ohio to watch Ohio State's season-opening football game Saturday in the comfort of their homes.
A formal announcement could come later today.
Sports Business Daily is also reporting the agreement on its Web site. A Big Ten Network spokeswoman would not immediately confirm a deal. A message was left for an Insight spokesman.
Ohio State will open the 2007 season against Youngstown State at noon in Ohio Stadium. The game is expected to be one of three or four OSU games, including the Sept. 8 game against Akron, that will be carried on the new network, which launches programming at 8 p.m. Thursday.
The network will be part of Insight's "expanded basic" service that also includes ESPN, the source said. The channel number was unavailable.
Prior to the agreement, central Ohio fans' only option for watching the game was via satellite provider DirecTV.
Insight is the second-largest of three cable providers in central Ohio. The other two, Time Warner and WOW, have not come to terms with the Big Ten Network
In its first year, the network plans to televise 39 Big Ten football games, 140 men's basketball games, 55 women's basketball games and 170 other sports events. At least seven and possibly a dozen or more Ohio State men's basketball games will be shown exclusively on the network.

I don't think comcast has a deal with them yet. A negative add campaign on TV and radio is hot and heavy in the hot and heavy state o' Indiana....

I don't know.....Wouldnt it be a good move on BTN part to lower their prices to get into our homes and then charge a premium at the next negotiating cycle?

I have no idea how cable contracts work- it just seems that if i'm BTN, the last thing that I want to do is have 1 carrier and swim in a sea of red ink right out of the gate.

Plus by letting a minor Cable Co in- it gives the impression that "Everyone" else other than the giants have it. Thus more consumer pressure on the biggies.

Well, with Comcast being a 50% interest holder in Insight I think they just gained some new (cough) insight on BTN's latest price.

they are similar to some cheaply produced political campaign ad. Talks about how the BTN is the bad guys and that Comcast already tries to offer many Big Ten sports and such (which they kind of did, with their new Comcast Local channel).

still, screw Comcast and screw the BTN.

I got this response from DISH Tv today, for what it's worth:

For several months, DISH Network has been diligently negotiating with BTN to obtain a carriage agreement consistent with other regional sports networks, but BTN wants unreasonable and inconsistent payments from all of our customers regardless of whether or not they are Big Ten fans. The good news is that DISH Network customers who are Big Ten fans will get most of their games with the current channels available on DISH Network ? at no additional cost.
DISH Network realizes how important these games are to our customers and will continue to work to provide the best in college and all sports, at the best value anywhere. We are keeping the door open in the hopes we can conclude a reasonable deal with BTN.
