West Virginia Transfer enjoys Kicker Competition
Andrew Good, a Walk-on Junior Kicker with the Buckeyes, makes good out of a bad situation with transfer to Ohio State. When Andrew didn?t agree with his position coach on the Mountaineers staff he took a chance by transferring and now has a new outlook on football at the college level.

Graduating from Boardman High School in 2003, Andrew Good had the opportunity to sign with West Virginia and pursue a college career as a place kicker. He was also a top prospect in baseball and contemplated playing both sports. 'I graduated in 2003, and I was part of the 2003 football team at WVU. I wouldn't say I was one of the top players, (too many [players] to make that assumption). I was contemplating playing both [sports] at WVU, but unfortunately the time demanded would have been too much for me, so I chose to play football full-time.'
His time a West Virginia didn?t turn out like he had planned and he soon transferred to Ohio State. 'I transferred to
OSU in the summer of 2005. The reason for transferring was that I really didn't get along with my position coach very well. I constantly felt like I was always on the back burner, even when I performed well. After time, the situation wore me down to where I didn?t even want to play football anymore. But since coming to
OSU, the whole aspect and feelings are gone and I love it here for football.'
Growing up in Ohio, Andrew always wanted to be a Buckeye. 'Yes, you could say it has always been a dream of mine to play for
OSU. My father graduated from here, and knowing how proud he is as well as my whole family is to see me in a Buckeye uniform really makes my dream come to a reality.' In addition to always wanting to play in Columbus, having a coach like Jim Tressel only helps make the situation that much more enjoyable. 'Coach Tressel is a irreplaceable coach on and off the field. Not only does he care for his players like family but he cares for everyone in this whole University and the fans around the country. His performance pertaining to the program is remarkable. He keeps the program focused and goal oriented at all times and makes sure that every player is comfortable and is working hard to play/compete/and learn to be the best that they are. Not to mention his dedication to making sure every player is on track with school work and getting their degree and graduating.'
Andrew has this year and next year left of eligibility and likes the competition between himself, Aaron Pettrey and Ryan Petorius. 'Since I arrived in Columbus, I'd say the competition has been pretty competitive. When I first arrived it was more apparent, but since this season has started it's been apparent that Pettrey is the favorite and what not, but he deserves it because he works hard.' That doesn?t mean Andrew doesn?t prepare for each game in case he is needed. 'During the off-season, I lifted weights at multiple times a week. Also, I stretched and focused on kicking drills to help me get focused, fundamentally sound, and stronger. I also worked with the other kickers to always have someone to watch and evaluate myself.'
Andrew also told us about this year?s team dedication to winning and which young players have impressed him the most this season. 'As for 2006, we have a very talented group of guys coming back and I know we will all work hard for the best.' The best young players would be 'Chris Wells, Ray Small, Brian Hartline, Austin Spitler, and Ross Homan.'
