Who's the Greatest Buckeye Quarterback?
Every Saturday, we will post a poll on "Who's the Greatest Buckeye" at each of the positions. The first poll, quarterback, will open today, and run for 40 days. The last poll, head coach, will open on the day of THE GAME, and close on December 30th. By New Years Day, we will have the Buckeye Planet All-Time Buckeye Team.
All players selected for the poll will be from the "modern era", which we have more-or-less arbitrarily determined to have begun with the hiring of Woody Hayes in 1951. However, there will be a special poll for the older Buckeye stars, where you will be allowed to choose amongst such greats as Les Horvath, Vic Janowicz, Chic Harley, etc. Please vote on each poll, if you can. Also, please note that each poll will allow you to vote at least twice, as we would like to compile a first and second team. If you vote for "other", please let us know your selection(s) by setting forth the name(s) in a post. Polls will be posted as follows: 1. Quarterback 2. Athlete 3. Tailback 4. Fullback 5. Wide Receiver 6. Tight End 7. Offensive Tackle 8. Offensive Guard 9. Offensive Center 10. Defensive Tackle 11. Defensive End 12. Outside Linebacker 13. Middle Linebacker 14. Safety 15. Cornerback 16. Kicker 17. Punter 18. "Old Timer" 19. Head Coach So, please vote now for your All-Time Greatest Buckeye Quarterback; please make TWO selections. Thans for your participation. I've looked at this poll about 3 or 4 times now and each time I think I'm willing to vote, I balk... I know Frey is out of the running (in my consideration, anyway) but I can't pull the trigger on 2 yet.. How do you pick between Kern and Greene? I mean, Archie says Corny was not only the heart and soul of the O back in those days but was the best athlete on that team... Kern led OSU to the promised land as a Soph and coulda shoulda woulda won 3 if things had gone the way things are supposed to go (If you know what I mean)
I think I can eliminate Hoying and Germaine as they never won NC's. Both were great QB's and I truely enjoyed watching them play. But, even as I sit and say that, I don't feel comfortable dropping JG out of the running... You can't argue with CK's record. The guy was just a straight up winner. Great QB? Maybe not. By that I mean, I don't think he's ever going to be compared to Elway, Montana and the like. But, I'd never suggest CK should have gone elsewhere (Nor was I on the whole, CK screwed up a pass, lets put the gun slinger in, wagon) AS may have been the greatest QB potential wise OSU has ever had... And, now that I sit and think, why isn't Tomzack on this list? |

BKB - the last spot was down to Tomczak, Karsatos, and Frey. Of the three, Karsatos and Tomczak each started for two years, Frey for three; so, Frey made the list by a hair (BTW, he threw for approximately 7,000 yards in his career).
I voted for Greene and Germaine; Greene led the best Buckeyes team ever, IMO ('73-'75), and Germaine had the single best year ever for a Buckeye QB (1998, which was also one helluva team). It was tough not to vote for Kern and Krenzel, as each won an NC. |

Wow, you get stuffed on one "option" (I put that in quotes cause I'm still not sure what exactly THAT was) against Michigan and people forget your 7000 yards... I know I did anyway.. I still can't decide. |

All of these guys were great quaterbacks for OSU but I have to go with Krenzel, he made more key plays in the last two years for OSU than anybody I can remember....the kid is a winner, his record is outstanding and his record against Michigan (2-1) gets my vote.

I went Corny, Kern, Krenzel...
Combined, these guys lost a total of 7 games in 8 years as the starting QB |

This will all build to an all-time depth chart. Oh, I said Kern/Krenzel. But as most of you know, I was adopted into the Buckeye family, not born into it. So while I know all our history and the who's who, I don't have real-life perspective that can drive the intangible side of a comparison between a guy like Cornelius, and one like Rex. I rely heavily on some of the more 'old school' folks around here for that. Passing on the G's (Greene and Germaine) was tough, but I went with the K's in the end. |

OhioBuck made a great defense for Kern. I only picked one person though, as I voted before reading the "two post" request. Kern would be my second pick.
My first pick: Team player, Intelligent, Mobile, Tough, Overachiever and Clutch Player. Led team to best single season record in history of college football. NC championship. 2002 NC MVP. 2003 Fiesta Bowl champs. 25-2? overall record. - Craig Krenzel Go Bucks! ![]() Last edited by scarletngray; 07-17-2004 at 01:53 PM. |

If you inadvertently voted for only one player (I should have said something in the title of the poll - next time, for sure), then please post the name of your second place choice, and I will add those votes to that player's total number of votes.

I'll go Kern with Krenzel as a very close second. Both beat Michigan twice and won us a national title. Kern had the slightly better overall record as a starter and did lead us to that 50-14 annihilation of Michigan, and started for three years instead of two.

Voted for Kern, please add my vote for krenzel. Corny would be my close second . I personally when I look at a QB I look at what he accomplishes . I was originally going to go with Art S but then I thought about what he did accomplish. Of course you could always argue that he didn't have the supporting cast the others did. On the other hand that same supporting cast for one year almost won the NC.

I'm a little surprised that I'm the only one to vote for Art. He was probably the most talented QB, if not the brightest guy in the world. Woody doesn't go to a passing offense for just anybody. Art, IMO, had to be pretty flippin' good, for that to happen.

I only voted for Krenzel, please add my 2nd place vote for Kern.
