Herbstreit rips U-M on radio
Starting a new thread for this to keep the growing Herbstreit firestorm out of the UM game thread, since this will no doubt spawn a huge ancillary discussion for the next three weeks.

I think it's interesting how they globbed onto that word "worthless." As if Herbie was actually calling Breaston worthless. If you read the whole quote (which the second article didn't even bother to include the entire quote), he was basically saying that Breaston is worthless in the way he is being used in this offense. I don't think he is saying that they kid doesn't have talent, but that TSUN isn't making good use of him for whatever reason. Had Herbie used a term like "non-factor" it wouldn't have been an issue. I'm just amazed how people (especially media) love to fixate on one word (often taking it out of context) to flame somebody. I mean, really, its sooo gay.

Kirk also said that by the time the 18th around these guys (Michigan's offense) are going to be ready to play and will make it a good game. He was only talking about the way they're playing right now.
After 17 points scored on Northwestern, how is that even controversial??? Oh that's right. Taking things out of context to drum up controversy for an event that doesn't need it is the media's primary function. |

Michigan couldn't get bulletin-board material from existing coaches, players. They'll have to find former players to quote on their bulletin boards. Fine with me.

This one ought to get the rhodents going - it's a linked haedline on the Go Blue scout board.
http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll...611010338/1131 Roundup Herbstreit rips U-M on radio TV analyst and ex-OSU quarterback says defense will fail, receiver Breaston is mostly 'worthless.' Angelique S. Chengelis / The Detroit News John T. Greilick/The Detroit News Kirk Herbstreit on U-M receiver Steve Breaston: "Outside of returning a few punts he hasn't done anything since his freshman year." The big game is more than two weeks away, but because of the potential matchup of No. 1 Ohio State versus No. 2 Michigan, the talk already has started. Here are some excerpts from Kirk Herbstreit on his radio show Monday afternoon on "The Big Show" on WBNS 1460 in Columbus. Herbstreit, a former Ohio State quarterback, is a well-respected college football television analyst: On the Michigan defense: "I personally don't think their defense, the way Ohio State will spread them out, can just dominate the game and shut Ohio State down." On Michigan not being able to score enough points to beat OSU: "The way they look right now, I don't think anybody can see that. "(Receiver) Mario Manningham coming back, one guy doesn't make a big difference in most cases, but the reason it does in Michigan's case is because it's like a domino effect. "If Manningham's able to come back and be the player that he was before the injury, (receiver Adrian) Arrington can go back to doing what he does, instead of being the go-to guy. "(Receiver Steve) Breaston can go back to whatever he's doing these days, if they could ever find a way to actually apply him in the offense. He's worthless in my mind, outside of returning a few punts. I'll say that, and he'll end up winning the game for them on Nov. 18. But he hasn't done anything since his freshman year." On what would happen today if U-M and OSU met: "If those two teams were to play right now, just the way they're playing, I don't even think it would be close. Ohio State not only wins that game the way they're playing right now, maybe by a few scores." On Michigan's fans not sticking around for last Saturday's game against Northwestern: "If you're a Michigan fan, honestly, help me to understand, you have a team that is No. 2 in the country, you only get a chance to see them play at home six or seven times and you bail in the second quarter?" I love how this "reporter" takes Herbie's comments out of context and makes it sound like he thinks the scUMmers have no chance. Fabricated bulletin board material - this one's just going to get crazier over the next couple of weeks. Last edited by MililaniBuckeye; 11-01-2006 at 05:43 PM. Reason: moved from UM game thread |

I don't believe that article. Everybody knows that Herbie doesn't show the Buckeyes enough love, and would never trash TSUN.
Seriously, I agree with most of what he said, but I'll bet that he wishes he had worded his comments about Breaston a little differently. The [censored]storm will result in some flak at his ESPN position. But in reality, this all means nothing. If a TSUN player needs bulletin board material from a former player to get hyped up for The Game this year, he'd never be ready to play anyway. |

Herbie's comments about the empty seats in AA aren't getting much play.
I was amazed at the number of empty seats in that stadium, when the #2 team in the country held a 10-3 lead in the third quarter. |

i don't care what Herbie was really saying, or even that he said what every other Buckeye in the world is thinking, but i don't like it when i hear stuff like this... too many bad memories ascociated with some Buckeye or another spouting off at the mouth in the media, and then the Scarlet and Gray not backing it up on the field... maybe it's a residual Cooper effect, but this kind of stuff makes me cringe... those Blue bastards are motivated enough as it is. there is absolutely NO reason to give them any more ammunition...

I watched the scUM-Northwestern game on TV. Breaston's hands are so bad, that I'm kind of amazed Henne actually bothers to throw to him.
In summary: 1) Receiver that can't catch == Worthless 2) Having a Receiver that can't catch == Kind of gay, but hey... |

Mostly worthless?
Herbie's out of line there. If it wears [censored] & blue, it is *completely* worthless. The people calling him out are wondering why such an astute analyst would make such *outrageous* statements - implying that it's out of character. Maybe he's still astute. How responsible would it be of him to talk about how M*ch*g*n has a chance to win the game, only for them to get beaten like a rented mule on Nov. 18. How astute would he be then? |
