Six Buckeyes Earn Academic Honors
Tuesday, November 21, 2006

The success of the Ohio State Football team has reached far beyond the football field this season. Six Buckeyes have been named to the Academic All-District team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and sponsored by ESPN The Magazine. Four Buckeyes, including center Doug Datish, wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez, linebacker James Laurinaitis and fullback Stan White Jr., were named to the first team and will join the first-team selections from the other seven districts on the ballot for Academic All-America honors, which will be announced Nov. 30.

Defensive tackle Joel Penton and wide receiver Brian Robiskie were second-team Academic All-District selections.

Datish, Gonzalez, Laurinaitis and White will seek to become Ohio State?s first Academic All-American since Craig Krenzel in 2003 and join a list of 31 former Buckeyes who earned national academic honors.

Datish (history) and White (graduate studies) already have earned their undergraduate degrees. Gonzalez (philosophy) joined those two on the Academic All-Big Ten team last fall, while Laurinaitis (business) should receive that honor this season.

Ohio State?s six honorees all are starters and have helped the Buckeyes keep their No. 1 national rank all season going into the game Saturday against No. 2 Michigan.

Student-athletes must be a starter or significant reserve, be at least a sophomore and carry a minimum 3.2 cumulative grade point average to be nominated for the team by their sports information director, who then joins other SIDs in voting on their respective all-district team. The states of Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama comprise District IV.

It is really nice having a center who is on this list. Having an intelligent center is an important piece in having successful o-line play.

Big Ten Leads All Conferences With 11 Academic All-Americans in Football

Big Ten boasts conference-record eight first-team selections, more than all other Division I-A conferences combined

Park Ridge, Ill. - The Big Ten topped all conferences with 11 members of the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Football Team which was announced today, an increase of three over the conference's eight honorees from last season.

The Big Ten's 11 Academic All-Americans included a conference-record eight first-team selections, surpassing the previous high of seven first-team choices established in 1969. In addition, the Big Ten's total of eight first-team honorees surpassed the total of seven first-team picks from all other Division I-A conferences, including two Big East selections and one choice each from the ACC, Big 12, MAC, Pac-10 and SEC.

Penn State's Paul Posluszny was named the Academic All-America of the Year, joining Ohio State's Craig Krenzel (2003) and Purdue's Drew Brees (2000) as the third Big Ten player to be honored in the last seven years. Posluszny garners first-team Academic All-America recognition for the second straight season and boasts a 3.56 grade point average in finance.

Posluszny was joined by seven other Big Ten student-athletes on the Academic All-America first team, including Indiana's Will Meyers, Iowa's Mike Elgin, Mike Klinkenborg and Adam Shada, Ohio State's Anthony Gonzalez and Stan White and Penn State's Tim Shaw. The conference's three second-team choices are Ohio State's James Laurinaitis, Penn State's Nolan McCready and Wisconsin's Joe Thomas. Meyers, Elgin and Posluszny all earned first-team Academic All-America accolades for the second straight year after being honored in 2005.

To be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00 and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his current institution.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Big Ten Conference announced its spring Academic All-Conference Team Thursday. Ohio State led the conference with 146 honorees.

The Buckeyes topped the Big Ten for the fifth-consecutive year with a total of 257 recipients during the academic year. The number is the second-highest of student-athletes ever named to the team. Last year, Ohio State broke the league record with 263 honorees. The 2004-05 season also was a banner year for the Buckeyes, as they broke the then-conference record with 260 student-athletes.

For the spring quarter, women's rowing led Ohio State with 20 student-athletes named to the Academic team. Men's track and field followed with 18 members. Men's lacrosse followed with a total of 17 student-athletes. Women's track and field also reached double digits with 13.

To be eligible for the selection, athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second year at their respective universities and maintain a grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher.

Yes. I think tOSU has somewhere around 30 sports teams while NU only has 18.

EDIT- tOSU has 35 and NU has 19.
