Simple Question...

from a simple mind.

This one's for you X's and O's types (I'm looking in your direction, Grad)

Being a big, dumb line animal, I am familiar with the position "Wide Receiver." OSU always refers to Split ends and Flankers, and while I can guess at the difference, I realize I know very little about what the wideouts really do on each play (other than run really fast and hopefully catch the friggin' ball). Anyone care to offer some insight into the WR position and its intricacies for us less-than-bright types? Maybe in Blog form.

I thank you in advance for your patronage.

In a Pro Set, the Flanker is always off the LOS on the TE side while the Split End is on the LOS on the weak side.
In a Slot/Twins set, the Split End will again be on the line while the Flanker will split the difference between the SE and the OT with his alignment and will again be one step off of the LOS.

The Flanker is usually the better blocker since he is on the strong side and will be responsible to lock up the CB. The SE will usually head straight for the Safety to supply the "getaway" block. If the play is run to the weak side, the blocking roles simply reverse.

Found this on BN to illustrate...Hollins is your SE(aligned on the LOS) while Santonio is your Flanker (1 step off the LOS on the strong side). The DBs are in man for now because EJ is looking at Hollins. When playing zone, the DBs will be focusing on the QB...but then again, it could be a bump cover 2 look or a false pre-snap read.

I'd love to diagram some basic plays against various defenses...traps, sweeps, powers, discuss route relation and reason for such. I'm not very good at all with the graphics, as Clarity will attest, and I would hate to burden him. Anything else you are curious about, fire away. I'm off to the SC Coach's Clinic sunday, so I'm taking it easy tonight and will be around.

Thanks much. I figgered it was something along those lines, just going from the names.

I have decided it's time I learn some of the things that sometimes just don't register on game day, you know?

What I really think we need is a Gorilla Wideout. A real Robert Gallery type. SURE he won't outrun any DB's... or LB's. But who could wrestle the ball away from him? Probably not very effective, I know. But funny as HELL.

I like the Gorilla thought...

I should have explained better initially, but the reason for the Flanker being off of the LOS is to keep the TE uncovered and thereby an eligible receiver. You must have a minimum of 7 players on the LOS but can have as many as you like...we played a team last year that used a 9-1-1 formation on the goal (9 lineman, 1 QB, 1 back). However, only the back and end on both sides were eligible receivers.

Not to completely change the subject (but in a way, to do just that)

Didja notice on the Schollie breakdown by class+ position that next year we'll be down to (at best) two true soph's at RB?

Knowing the way JT & Co. run the Offense, I think we'll see Haw and Pittman (or perhaps just Pittman, depending on how quiclky Haw picks up the schemes) get a serious look at quality PT this year. I'd hate to go into next year with two "unblooded" RB's. I know it's not the end of the world, but that frightens me.

To REALLY go off the deep end. Knowing our relative lack of depth at RB, and the persistent lack of an offer to Ringer (I know, grades may be an issue) I wonder if we can infer something from this, with regards to Wells. Not really, but it's a good way to waste a few of those interminable offseason minutes.

I love the potential we have in the backfield, with Ross and Hall both chomping at the bit to make a statement in their Sr. year, and with what Pittman demonstrated this spring in terms of understanding and ability to play within the system. And Haw's speed, if not TOO much a result of quick stopwatches, is flat out scary in anybody built on a frame larger than about 165 lbs.

My prediction: Pitt gets some garbage time early on, does nothing spectacular (and more importantly, nothing stupid). Maybe later in the year (I'm thinking MSU and later) he'll be thrown in as small man on the regular rotation--to add depth, because we'll be banged up down the stretch, and to prepare for next year. Of course, what do I know?

thoughts?

rotten fruit you'd like to throw at me?

(you know... that's how I ended the last seminar talk I gave... funny, that.)
