Penalties
IMO penalties killed us last year. We need to be more disciplined and cut down on those penalties. There were times when we had horrible field position and we got pinned back because of stupid penalties. What do you guys think?

What killed me is the fact that Holding is apparently no longer a penalty.

Sigh.

I'm talking about all the personal fouls and stupid penalties. I agree our DL was being held alot. We need to clean this problem up or it may cost us a game. Just think if Sorgie would have stayed in the game after the RR choke. IMO that changed the momentum of the game.

Oh. I understood. wasn't trying to argue at all. A lot of stupid, unnecessary stuff happened. That's the nature of the beast.

I was just saying that if holding were called more consistently, there's not a team that would have kept it close last year, cause our D Line was UN... STOPPABLE.

Your cool I was just thinking about this problem. The best thing about a problem like this is that it is correctable. It makes you look like thugs as well which I hope we are never compared to teams like Miami.

Some of those personal fouls last year really helped the other teams move down the field. I'm guessing penalties cost us 28-35 points last year and they helped other teams score 28-35. thats around a 6 point swing average per game. Thats UNACCEPTABLE especially when alot of it was unnecessary.

I don't mind hustle PF like hawk got a couple of time. Smith had a couple of questionable one called on him. It's the one that are done out of frustration or lack of concentration.

Grad what do you as a coach in practice to eleviate penalties?

Well, we concentrate mostly on mental penalties that can be avoided...false starts and personnel changes mainly. Frustration penalties cannot be avoided by coaching so you have to learn to know when a player is reaching that point where his productivity is being hindered by frustration. However, football is an aggressive game so you never want to take away a kid's natural hustle or intensity by collaring ALL of that emotion.

I used to just lop off one of their fingers, but the school admin let me go (for lying on my resume. Turns out I never juggled flaming bowling balls like I said.)

As penalties go, I agree - nothing wrong with a hustle pen. Maybe a late hit going OB. Smith got a couple called on him that I didn't think needed to be called. A PI or two on Fox was ........ how do we say.... phantom. The ones that really [censored] me off are false starts. If memory serves, RR didn't get flagged on the choke, although he - rightly - caught a [censored] load of flack. He may have gotten the hankie, but I think he didn't... anyone remember for sure?

The first thing is to move from the "IMO" and look at the facts. So I checked the Big Ten stats from last season - and sure enough OSU was the 10th most penalized team in the league and their opponents were the 9th least penalized. The net difference was 18 yards per game.

With all JTs emphasis on "6 inch steps versus 5 inch steps" that is a puzzlement and not at all what I expected to find.

Now that you mention it BKB we did have some very questionable interference calls last year. Man I remember the NCST and BG games. It was bad enough we were letting them back into the game let alone the officials, but the officials make mistakes and they are part of the game.

oh8ch the thing stats don't tell is the situation or status of the game when the penalties were called. I don't care about yards net difference but I do care when we get a PI, OS, HLD or PF penalties when teams are 3rd down and long in our red zone. We gave away alot of first downs in the red zone due to penalties.

I care when we are marching down the field like a well oiled machine and get to the red zone and get a HLD nad have to settle for a FG.

Stats don't tell everything and this was a mjor problem with our team last year.

I remember last year that OSU's opponents were the least penalized in the B10. In other words, OSU benefited the least from penalty yardage.
