Buckeyes fans come out in full force for pep rallyBy RUSTY MILLER, AP Sports Writer January 7, 2007 PHOENIX (AP) -- For the only time this season, Troy Smith was in a stadium and refused to take center stage. The Heisman Trophy-winning Ohio State quarterback declined to do more than introduce teammate Doug Datish on Sunday before more than 35,000 scarlet-clad fans who filed into Chase Field for a rousing "Buckeye Bash." The Buckeye Bash was a good time. Chase Field (formerly "the BOB") is right in downtown Phoenix. I noticed how brown the grass was, and wondered about that - then I learned they are having a MotoCross event there this Saturday.
Seeing a crowd that was announced at 37,000 at a pep rally was impressive. AD Gene Smith, Archie, JT and the 4 captains all talked briefly. They asked the crowd to take over the stadium tomorrow night. Krenzel, Doss, Hartsock, Mo Hall and Branden Joe, from the 2002 team all talked briefly. They were in an area in the right field grass signing autographs (for a fee, with the money going to a charity for kids). From the '70s, Tom Skladany, John Hicks, Pete Johnson, Mike Datish (Doug's Dad), and Champ Henson all talked to the crowd briefly. Pete said that an earlier speaker was inaccurate when introducing Mayor Coleman as perhaps tOSU's biggest fan, since Pete was clearly the biggest fan (he's noticeably over his playing weight). The band played their Hollywood Blockbusters set (from The Game halftime, as well as tomorrow night) and all the Buckeye favorites. They rehearsed on Tempe High's football field this morning, using the props but not wearing uniforms. It was very odd to see them play the music to ScriptOhio with only the drum major (shadowed by the assistant drum major) walking the steps. Seeing how they practice, and all that's involved, definitely increased my appreciation for what TBDBITL does. |

Newark Advocate web site has some pictures from yesterday's joint celebration in Glendale. Looked like folks were in good spirits, bands and all, but hard to tell how many in attendance.

The pictures on the Newark Advocate site look particularly good.
The galleries are here (BCS Fan Bash) and here (Buckeye Bash). In the BCS Fan Bash gallery the last picture shows the end zone painting work. |

Seeing those pictures reminds me of being there in Jan '03 for the last NC game. The Buckeye pride and enthusiasm was awesome. Nice to see that we've got a big crowd again to cheer on the Bucks.
