I think that you can infer from the following post that Garrett has been in contact with some of the other Buckeye recruits:

Goebel hopes to make another "unofficial visit" to Columbus in the near future.

Very different circumstances though. Sweat's visit to ND was very much impromptu, in order to make sure there would be no regrets - and the coaches needed to convince him at that. Not so with Goebel. Also, everyone knew Sweat was very close to deciding. Goebel is aiming for some time during late July/ early August at this point. I think the comparison is negligible, to be frank.

Just saying that Goebel's visit wasn't some last ditch effort here - it's something to make note of, especially when he says ND is recruiting him the hardest (check earlier in the thread).

I'm not sure Goebel is the type to need that kind of attention. Unless the kid says he hasn't heard from the other staff enough or in a while, I don't get too worked up if OSU is not recruiting someone the hardest.

Some of the text msg blitzes cfb staffs (or their assistants) put on kids are truly astounding.

Blue (ND) is used to represent flaws, while scarlet (OSU) was used to express passion and himself.

Trust me, I read about some of the text messages our old QB coach sent to a recruit last year (Arrelious Benn)... sickening stuff, from an ethical standpoint. Extremely glad he's no longer with the team.

I wasn't trying to insinuate that Goebel needs a lot of attention, specifically. I just know that the amount of attention you give a kid is a factor. When Tyrone wasn't starting out 8-0, he couldn't recruit a hill of beans to play at ND, 'cause he never spent time on them.

Its a bit of an extreme example, but sometimes, its as simple as the more often you pitch your program, the higher your chances are of giving the right pitch... it can backfire though if you hound a guy, so I will give you that. Just haven't been hearing anything to that extent, and the article I heard it in was largely positive about ND. So we'll see.

I can state FOR A FACT that Garrett does NOT NEED NOR SEEKS ATTENTION, and he has not come right out and said it to me but I have a valid suspicion that he would rather me stay out of any forums concerning him. My dilema is that I prefer to dispell rumors, seperate FACTS from ficticious statements. Therefore he actually does not mind the texts from OSU staff (because it is primarily just casual, friendly correspondence with occasional updates on recently commited propects BUT NEVER any "high pressure, when you gonna verbally commit to the Buckeyes"..put you on the "hot seat" types of questioning!!) On the other hand there are a few schools (I'll let you use your imagination / instincts to guess which schools) that will text Garrett and "PLAY TWENTY QUESTIONS" (no vague answers accepted), want to know EXACTLY where they rank on his list, when you will be coming down to commit.? will you have a decision by tomorrow or end of the week.??..HIGH PRESSURE INTERROGATION and in my opinion "crossing the line" of ethical, non-harassing recruiting tactics (Taking this approach to the next level would be similar to IFC/ MMA submission hold waitimg for the propective recruit to "tap out" to surrender to the physcological, unrelenting torture of a college recruitor believing this kids decision is a life or death scenario for both the recruitor & the recruit). But I guess one needs to accept the cruel fact that in life one must adapt to high pressure, EXTREME measures / situations (while not jeapordizing their integrity / moral values) if they desire to succeed without selling their own souls in the process.

The biggest factor that I've witnessed regarding why a top level recruit chooses one program over another is whether the recruit felt like he is truly wanted / treasured by a program...was he one of the first kids offerred at his position or did the school just throw out an offer following the lead of other top teams in the conference?? Has the school been honest from the onset while being respectful (as opposed to demeaning / belittling) of the other programs which have also offerred this recruit?

XPUNISHR, is it safe to assume ND is talking to Garrett about the idea of being a combo DL...playing a little DE and a little DT in their 3-4 scheme? Obviously there are more important factors to a college decision than depth charts and I think we have already gathered that Garrett is anything BUT scared of a little competition. Having said that I wonder how ND's recruiting plays in to things...having already garnered verbals from a pure DT in Brandon Newman, a potential DT/OG in Hafis Williams (who most, including himself, think ends up on defense), a DE/DT combo in Sean Cwynar and the impending decision of another DT in Omar Hunter (both ND and UM fans are very confident about their chances)?

First of all, great post XPUNISHR. I think I may have been misunderstood, but at this point, I don't see any reason to drag it out, 'cause it would just derail the thread. All I'll say is, I never meant to insinuate Goebel needs attention - as I said earlier. Maybe a simple misinterpretation, but I'll let it rest, and get back on topic.

I have never heard of Hafis being mentioned as an OL candidate, and I've followed his recruitment since February. Even when I listened to one of his interviews, he never even mentioned the, "I'll get a look at ____ but I'll move to ____ if that doesn't work out" angle. All he mentioned was ND is recruiting him as a DE. Maybe people speculated because ND's OL coach recruited him, but coach Latina also recruited David Posluszny for LB, so it had more to do with region (Northeast) than position. So, you are right wadc, to know that most people think he'll end up on defense. Guess I'm surprised to hear the OL speculation is all.

But that in mind, Hafis is the only candidate being mentioned as a "combo" type lineman. His HS coach thinks he'll gain enough weight to be a 3-4 NT. He might be the "run stuffing" end though, but its too early to accurately project in his case. But both Cwynar and Goebel have been called "perfect" fits for the 3-4 end in their defense - by ND's staff. Cwynar would be a DT in the standard 4-3, but he's an end for the Irish, no doubt about it. So I would be thoroughly surprised to hear that Goebel would be sold on spot playing at NT.

Great stuff IrishCalves...glad to have a solid ND poster to talk legit...as for the Hafis/OL talk, that came from an ND fan of mine who mentioned he had heard that as a remote possibility. But he, like you and I, thinks when it is all said and done that Hafis ends up on the DL. That still means a class of Hafis (combo DL), Fleming (DE, I assume, or is he being looked at as a LB?), Cwynar (DE), Newman (DT) and possibly Hunter (DT), with offers also out Goebel (DE), Marcus Fortson (DT who probably stays South), Kapron Lewis-Moore (DE from Texas), Chancey Aghayere (stud DE from Texas who any program would love to have), Ethan Johnson (Oregon kid with a similar build to Cwynar and Goebel) and Shayne Hale (DE/LB). Doesn't that seem like a lot of offers to a lot of similar players?

An ND fan that I talk to and trust thinks that Williams will be a DE, Hunter (who I'm hearing more and more today that ND lands) and Newman NT's, Cwynar a DE, and Fleming a rush-LB...
Any way you slice it though, that's a lot of fresh blood and competition on the DL... I know Garrett isn't going to be scared off by competition, but with all those guys coming in, our DT depth chart, and the fact that he is our #1 target at DT, this all could work in our favor... (not to mention the comfortability that Garrett has with our staff)...

If Hunter does come on board, like we're hearing, that leaves one spot left for DL recruiting, most likely for a DE with more natural pass rush skills (Ethan Johnson or Kapron Lewis-Moore being our best shots).
