Ridiculous to think we're likely going to have two of the last three number one heavyweight wrestlers on our dline.

I think with his athleticism, Garrett might break some records at Ohio State for sacks by a DT. I'm thinking a more athletic Quinn Pitcock before he's done.

I can see that. He has very impressive moves on the line and can seemingly get to the QB at will.

Doesn't hurt and as you said, he is such a great athlete on top of having great leverage. I really think he's going to be a great one here. Also, is there any possbility Garrett could still get select to the AA game.

Garrett has stated publicly that HE WOULD NOT PARTICIPATE / ATTEND ANY POSTSEASON "ALL-AMERICAN'' GAME because of his commitment & dedication to his high school wrestling team, and out of respect of his coaches and teamates. He was invited to a All-American game in Orlando FLA which he respectfully declined while explaining his conflict with wrestling schedule. Garrett is captain & is determined to win the Class AA Team championship for the first time (as they were moved from"A" to "AA" two years ago) in school's history.

***Another possible feat for Goebel to achieve (yet not NEARLY as important to him) is he could become Illinois's High Schools record holder for "Most TOTAL career victories in 4 years of Varsity wrestling"

That's great character. Since these games (AA games) don't matter, help out all of your teammates that you wrestle with. Garrett will be a great one to watch.

The 33rd Dvorak Tournament is a chance for wrestling fans and competitors to get a midseason evaluation of which teams and individuals are at the top of their games.

Montini's Garrett Goebel (15-0, 13 pins), ranked No. 3 by Amateur Wrestling News, might be the nation's premier heavyweight. It's hard to gauge how he would stack up vs. the top five in his class who have earned college scholarships. Goebel will play football at Ohio State.

Goebel's father, Greg, the Broncos' defensive line and heavyweight coach, understood that the skills learned on the mat transfer effectively to the gridiron. He got his son wrestling at age 8.

''When Garrett said he wanted to go out for football [in junior high],'' Greg Goebel said, ''I said, 'You'll go out when you get to high school. I'll teach you everything you need to know about blocking and tackling the night before practice.'''

There's a good reason Goebel has dominated since he was a freshman 215-pounder. At Martinez Elite Kids Program, he absorbed Jose Martinez's lessons and developed an adroit, offensive style. Goebel went 55-1 last season with 34 pins en route to a state title.

''You just don't find a guy with Garrett's size [6-5, 275], speed, strength and skill,'' Montini assistant coach John Dziewiatkowski said. ''He doesn't wrestle like a heavyweight. He moves like a 171-pounder.''

"We know it's a really tough tournament," said the Broncos' defending state and Dvorak heavyweight champ, Garrett Goebel. "We're a younger team, but we've got a lot more depth. I think we're just as good as last year's team. We've just got to have a lot of younger guys step up."

I'm looking forward to seeing Garrett Goebel in a Buckeye uniform next year. tOSU is dedicated to having the best defense in the country and Garrett is a very important part of sustaining that great tradition year-in and year-out. Goebel received a "bye" (As #1 seed) in 1st round. In 2nd round Goebel pinned opponent in :25 sec. of 1st period. In Qtr. finals Goebel pinned opponent in :13 sec. of 1st period. Tomorrow Semi-final round brgins @ 10am, Finals @ 4 pm.
***Sure glad I did not spend 10 hours there to watch Garrett wrestle for a total of 38 seconds!!

Which is a tougher tourney this one or the Ironman?

With the exception of 2-3 weight classes, the ironman is tougher.

Ironman, without question.

However IL "Dvorak" has been adding new teams from across the nation the past few years and is WITHOUT QUESTION Illinois' Toughest tournament each year. Reportedly this year is the most competitive in it's 33 yr. history (well, maybe with the exception of 285 lb. class)
