Goebel was a good get and I think he has the drive to be not only a solid contributer, but also a starter. However, I see him as a little long and lean for a defensive tackle. Indeed, when you watch him wrestle, he relies more on his quickness and offesnive acumen to score than he does on leverage and brute power. In other words, he is quite "caty" for a heavyweight. I don't know how well that will translate to success at the DT position at a major college football program.
Does Heacock, contrary to the conventional wisdom, like tall defensive tackles? If so, why? I haven't seen much out of Abdallah and Worthington (who was a 5-star). Last edited by bucklifer; 12-22-2007 at 11:58 AM. Reason: spelling |

Lifer, far from knowledgeble about Heacocks preferences, but he has had some fairly tall DT's during his reign. K. Peterson and D Scott played a lot at DT and were both DE/DT hybrids so they were pretty tall 6'3"-6'5" he has also used shorter ones. I wonder if he does not somewhat alter his schemes to match his players skill set. The big space eaters demand help to move them out and the smaller (weight wise) and taller use their quickness to create problems.
Even if GG is not a brute strength type, he'll sure add some of that, while keeping his quickness in the S&C at tOSU. My big concern is will the Gladiator be able to keep his conditioning while dispatching his foes in such short order ![]() |

He's not that much taller than some recent talented DTs: 6'4" Wilkinson, 6'3" Pickett, 6'3" Anderson, 6'3" Peterson, 6'3" Scott. 1st round picks in 07: 6'2" Okoye, 6'4.5" Harrell, 6'6" Branch (1 spot from 1st, due to conditioning) |

GOEBEL WINS DVORAK, OUTSTANDING WRESTLER AWARD
Garrett pinned the #2 ranked wrestler in California in 45 seconds to clinch the title. He was not only awarded the OW award but also brought home the hardware for the most pins in the least amount of time. It was a great tournament with state champs and place winners from Illinois, Texas, Colorado and Iowa.

How far is GGG away from breaking that illinois record for wins (or was it pins?)

Senior highlights. My take: I knew Garrett was a football player...but he was more of a grinder in his earlier highlights. This collection, and it is a huge collection, displays tremendous athleticism and polish for a HS DLineman. He has excellent hand placement and sheds blocks well while also holding his gap integrity. Shows a great natural understanding of leverage and the all-important redirection skill. I was excited about Garrett before...but this highlight film has me thinking big things for GG. Highly impressed. |

Considering he's such a great athlete, I expected him to either bull rush or simply run around the offensive line. However, he showed an array of pass rushing moves. On one play, he used two consecutive swim moves to get by the lineman and then the running back. He finished the play by sacking the quarterback.
Really a great lineman in the Quinn Pitcock mold. |

I know I posted this on the previous page but I didn't want it to get lost after a new page was started so I deleted it and moved it here so people could see it with osugrad's review as well...
Rivals $ 12/27 Senior film. He is a freak...and I mean that in a good way. Kids this big are not supposed to be able to play that low and that fast. Watching film of kids like Goebel, Posey and Williams makes me realize just how amazing this class is. Everyone is focused on Block O, Pryor, etc. but we already have some studs in this class that have tremendous potential. Goebel is one of those studs... FYI, until now I don't think I've ever seen a kid use the swim move on three defenders in the same play to get a sack... |
