Wow, awesome article. The way it beagn really draws you right into it. in one of the attached photos, he looked to be about 7'8" weighing 450 lbs compared to that sorry little poodle trying to block him.

At 285 pounds, defending champion Garrett Goebel of Montini pinned both of his opponents in total of 1:57. Goebel (50-1) has recorded 40 falls this season, a feat made even more impressive considering seven of his wins came by forfeit.

How does one gain a forfeit victory. I wrestled for a long time and still do not know this answer. I guess I never kicked as much ass as G3, but I dont have a clue!

A forfeit would be awarded when the other team doesn't have a wrestler take the mat. That could occur if they had nobody in that weight class, or if their heavyweight was injured or ill, or possibly if he preferred a forfeit to getting pinned quickly.

This young man sounds like yet another "nail in the coffin" of many teams as represented by this incoming class. I think we may be surprised at how quickly several of them see significant playing time this fall. I can hardly wait.

Domination for Montini's heavyweight

Montini's heavyweight used three pins to reach the title mat in Champaign's Assembly Hall and improved to 52-1 with a 5-0 decision over St. Rita's Kevin Galeher for his second straight state title.

"To come through like he has with expectations as high as they were -- he's done a great job this year," said Montini coach Mike Bukovsky.

In all Goebel has left 42 of his opponents this year with the worst possible view of a gymnasium ceiling.

"Last year was my first year at heavyweight," said Goebel, who will play football next fall at Ohio State. "This year I came out of football feeling really confident and strong. I wanted to pin guys as fast as I can, and basically that was my mentality the whole year

CHAMPAIGN - With four wrestlers reaching the final round of the state wrestling tournament in Champaign, Montini still had to feel confident it wouldn't go home empty-handed after the first three came up short in their title bouts.

The final Bronco to take the mat, heavyweight Garrett Goebel, had pinned everything in sight this weekend and for most of the season.

Goebel (52-1), the defending champion, delivered with a 5-0 victory over St. Rita's Kevin Galaher but was unable to record his fourth pin of the tournament. Galaher (27-7) was called for stalling at several points in the match as Goebel did not record a takedown.

"You're not going to be able to pin everyone,," Goebel said.

Montini No. 1 start to finish

MOLINE -- The grin on Montini senior Dan Stelter's face was a mile wide on Saturday night.

"This is awesome. It's what we've been working for, for three years," Stelter said. "We were ranked No. 1 all year, and we wanted it to end that way.

Broncos senior heavyweight Garrett Goebel ended a historic career, completing a 57-1 senior year by setting a new career record for wins in Illinois with 201. Goebel also set an IHSA record with 129 career pins.

The final high school match of Goebel's career lasted 37 seconds, ending with a pin of the Celtics' Steve Laski. Goebel will give up wrestling for football at Ohio State next year.

"I'll miss it. I guess I don't how I'm going to take my anger out next year," Goebel joked.

"You just take him for granted," said Montini coach Mike Bukovsky. "He gets up to warm up and right away you just add 6 (team points) in your head. He's a great kid, and we'll miss him."

Grant Goebel has been one of Montini's unsung heroes all year, as a 175-pound junior wrestling at 215 most of the year. Goebel went 36-9 this year and posted three wins Saturday, including a pin against Glenbard North and a takedown for a win with seconds remaining in his match against Providence.

"I don't how he does it," Bukovsky said. "He's got an attitude, and that's what we had this year.

"If I'm going to have to give up wrestling, this is the way that I want to do it," said senior heavyweight Garrett Goebel, who has committed to play football at Ohio State.

Goebel (57-1) closed out his senior year the way he spent much of his career -- pinning people.

He stuck all three opponents on the day, including final opponent Steve Laski in 37 seconds, a Class AA tournament record at 285 pounds. Goebel broke his record of 51 seconds, set last season.

Garrett's last high school goal was to lead his team to it's first Class AA State TEAM championship which was achieved a few weeks ago.

Now (for the 1st time) Garrett is 100% focused on training regimine / preparation for his first season as a Buckeye. Garrett is trying to "finalize" a date for his "official visit" some time in upcoming 4-6 weeks.
