2007 WR discussion

Quotes from JT today.

official.site

Quote:
On replacing several standouts in the receiving corps

"We lose three guys - Ted Ginn Jr., Anthony Gonzalez and Roy Hall - who have been doing good things here for a longtime. Robiskie and Hartline come back and we expect them to raise their games. They are both skilled, tough and precise receivers."

Some guys will have to fight it out to get in the game. Last year we had three-plus receivers in the game for 75 percent of the time. Are we going to be that way this year? I don't know. But, guys like Albert Dukes and Devon Lyons, who have been in the background the last couple years, will have an opportunity. Ray Small is a guy who we decided not to redshirt last year because he helped us immediately. He has a lot to offer and last year will help him.

It will be interesting to watch. We want to be deep at receiver. We'll see if these guys can do the things the three we lost did the last couple years. It will be fun to watch them progress."

I think Robiskie will have an outstanding/breakout season. He has a TON of talent!! It will be great to see him mature into the leadership role.

Robo, Hartline, Small, Dukes, Lyons, Dane S, and Torian Washington... I'd say we're far from depleted here.

Honestly I'm not worried about the recievers. This is what I think but this is just my opinion

Small=Ginn (not that straight line speed, but the threat to break it at any time and small is actually more shiftier)

Hartline=Gonzo (Sneaky speed, great hands, physical, and great in the slot)

Robo=Robo (He's unique because he wasn't really like anyone in our offense, great hands, above average speed, good routes, and kind of reminds me of Micheal Jenkins)

Lyons=Hall (obviously the size and physical nature of Lyons is very similar to Hall, but we never saw much of Hall so maybe we can see more of Lyons)

Dukes- People have compared him to a better Santonio Holmes (I doubt it) but even making that remark is saying the talent is there. I think he'll step up and actually be the #4 reciever. Great speed, and great route running, just can't hold onto the ball.

Dane S- can't spell his last name so screw it... I don't know a lot about him but what I hear is the kid can run and can definatly play so hopefully he can add some nice depth. Redshirt??

Torian Washington- Kind of the same as Dane but maybe a bit bigger I think? I could be wrong, He'll most likely be redshirted

I think I read somewhere that Ted Ginn Sr said that Ray Small was the best receiver he's ever coached. To be fair to Ginn Jr, he never played receiver in high school (cornerback and quarterback). But I still find that to be a very good compliment, coming from a coach who has seen more than his share of talent.

Many of us have been saying since last spring that Robo will be tOSU's next great reciever, and I'm confident this will be his breakout year. We're incredibly deep here and continue to bring in more talent, so I don't think WR is a position we'll have to worry about for a long time.

Going into Spring the glass is always half empty, until it can be proven to be filled. Robo had a very nice year but not the focus of Defense with Ginn and Gonzo. With Ginn out of BCS game no one stepped up. No insider information but think that Washington is going to be a starter. It always seems like those 3 star kids that no one talks about coming in Hawk, Jenkins surprise us. I am really hoping that Dukes and Lyons can step up but would be shocked since they could not beat out Hall and Small as a freshman. I see more 2002 football with Robo and Hartline reminding us of Jenkins just keeping the chains moving.

What he said was that Ray Small was the most explosive player he ever coached.

And remember that when they ran head to head in Dayton last spring, Saine only beat him by a step in the 100 (10.38 vs 10.55). I am not too concerned about his playmaking abliity. I am only concerned with our ability to get him the ball where he can make a play.

People have always said that he doesnt hold onto the ball, but I don't remember him dropping any in practice...It was always his ability to block that was keeping him off the field...

I am hoping for a breakout season from him...Right now they have him as the back up for Hartline and Small, so that would put him as the 4th receiver and the way we run receivers in and out and we will see some 4 WR sets he should see plently of time...

A buddy of mine who is at practice every day says Small will be a better receiver than Ginn-shorter,stockier, w/ better hands and explosion, but less top end speed. Hartline will be scary as a full time starter,IMO.

Just about every one of these guys has the potential to be an all-american by the time its all said and done. Even great Dane. Its just all gonna come down to work ethic and who can execute within Bollman's offensive style best.

Small is very similar to Holmes IMO. Good burst, good concentration and looks crisp out on the field. He just needs to have a break out game and become a part of the scheme.

Ok. I think I heard it from someone who heard it from someone who heard it from someone. Somewhere, the quote got jumbled and wrong. Either that, or my remembery was wrong. Thanks.

But it's still a very good compliment, coming from Ted Ginn Sr.

I think Small is a bit more quicker than holmes though.. the comparison is pretty fair though! We need Small to do some things like Hand offs and reverses like Teddy use to do. I realize Teddy is a once in a life time talent but we still need to incorporate that.. especially with someone like small who has great speed and probably even more shake n' bake than ginn! GO BUCKS
