2004 Pre-Season Practice (official thread)

I found this on the other board, figured it is well worth mentioning.

"The following thoughts are in no order whatsoever, so bear with me. And keep in mind we had no jersey numbers to work off of, so it's hard to get an idea of who was who, other than the biggies.

Santonio is uncoverable. UN-COVER-A-BLE. Period. One play, Fox was covering him, probably a 5 yard cushion. As Santonio went by, Fox grabbed a massive handful of shirt, and held it for probably 2 full seconds. Santonio still broke lose to the corner of the end zone for a score. He’s unbelievable. He and EJ got into a little pushing/shouting match – no big deal, though. The rest of the team was laughing it off.

Marcel Frost in no way looks as big as I pictured. Dragonknight could probably tell you a bit more about him, but the few plays I was watching, he looked very, very good. Nice hands. I believe it was Freeman who was trying to cover him in one on one drills, near the end. Frost simply beat him. Carpenter lined up in 7-7 I bet no more than 3 inches from Frost’s hand, and stayed with him step for step.

Bobby Carpenter is huge, like enormous huge. AJ Hawk is huge. Didn’t see Schlegal….

I was planning on writing a whole long post about Smith v. Zwick, but there’s really no point. Neither stood out in any way. Smith had a tendency to have poor accuracy, often throwing high or low. Zwick must room with Stan White or something – I bet he hit him no less than 8 times in 20 minutes. Both have strong arms, but I was not blown away by either of them.

If Roy Hall was there, I couldn’t tell who he was. Certainly didn’t stand out.

Bam Childress is very short. Dropped a couple sure catches, then made a move on Dustin Fox that Charles Woodson couldn’t cover. Up and down with Bam. But he can talk trash…lol.

There was another receiver w/dreads like Holmes, who I believe must have been Dukes. Very polished receiver, we got a good one there.

The most surprising player of the day was Tony Gonzales. There is no way he plays defense. He showed me very good moves and great speed, which we knew all along. What stood out was his physical play – he pushed off (very discreetly, I might add – they teach that well), bumped and shoved, and got open time and time again. No less than 3 really nice TD catches for him, from both QBs. Even more, when he lined up, he was telling the other WRs what coverage the D was in, what to check off to, etc. Really showed well today.

EJ Underwood is better than Chris Gamble. Amazing speed on this kid. I only saw him and Santonio against each other a couple times, and he held his own pretty well. Got beat once, picked off Zwick once. In one on one, someone, might have been Hall, ran about a 10 yard out. EJ covered him so close I literally could not see daylight between them. Incomplete pass. I like EJ

Youboty wasn’t practicing today, don’t know why.

The linemen were “working” out. Not very heated at all, just easing through things. Mangold was in charge there, for sure. He was yelling out what to do and keeping things moving.

Curt Lukens was much taller than I imagined. He was definitely at LB, looks like he’s put on weight, too."

Yeah, we all know about all those long TD passes he's given up during his two years at corner.

I don't understand what makes people think D. Fox has problems at corner. He does what he needs to do. Teams may throw a short 5 yder on him but he doesn't give up the big gainer. Fox is an All-American corner in my book.

I knew i'd get bad remarks for the comment but i'm still bitter over that NCState game, and when the person describes the person he is guarding as Un-Cover-Able makes me wonder. Regardless the rest of the review sounded like good news to me, wish the qb talk was a bit more positive but as said before it is just 7 on 7.

7 on 7 is alot different than game conditions. The QB has forever to find a receiver in 7on7.

I'm aware which I suppose makes my Fox comment not needed, however you have to be excited about the fact that Underwood was still able to stick all over his WRs even with all the time they were given. Don't they play 7 on 7 vs. some smaller ohio colleges too? If so when is that or was that a thing of the past?

I think the NCAA nixed that with other schools.
Here's a great pic of Fox. White men can jump.

I hope they're right about Underwood's improved coverage ability. If he is as good as the review says, then with Fox at the other corner we'll have a solid pass defense along with Salley and Whitner at safeties.

Now these are the kind of threads we need more threads of--I'm getting fired up! The biggest problem we have with Santonio will be trying to convince him to come back after this year, and that's a great problem to have.

Concerning the mediocre play of the QBs, does anyone think that Boeckman could be given a chance to prove his stuff if Zwick or Smith don't step up? It's seems unlikely for Tressel to go with an underclassman at QB, but from all the hype Zwick and Smith have been given for the past couple years, it seems like one of the two would be looking better in practice at this point. Then again, maybe it's a testament to the kind of talent we have on D.

IMO if they look like [censored] sandwiches out there Boeckman should be seriously considered. Many have said he looked the best in the spring game. IMO Zwick and Smith have short leashes. If Boeckman plays great in practice and they are struggling he will move up the depth chart. If the are not doing what JT WANTS THEN HE WILL FIND SOMEONE THAT DOES.

Great report from practice. Does anyone know when the next 7 on 7 is and where it would be held at? I wouldn't mind heading to campus to check it out.

Dustin Fox will be first team all big ten this year hands down. For those that still doubt him remember that he is a 4 year starter now at corner and the coaches know a hell of a lot more about the situation than we do. Periodic reviews from 7 on 7 scrimmages are not enough to dictate anything.

What they know is that the other corners were not ready and were not as good of open field tacklers. Now it sounds like at least Underwood is ready, when someone else is you will see Fox move. The negative comments people say about Fox's cover ability is true no matter what you guys think you see, he is not good. He is servicable at best. Not all Big Ten, I doubt he even would get an honorable mention, but he is a Sr. so they probably will give it to him.

Hall is very unassuming. That is why he is going to kill teams. Everyone will look to try to stop Holmes, and for good reason, but then they will look at the stat sheet and see that Hall actually did more damage.

Bam has got to hold on to the ball. He is going to be some kind of weapon if he can catch the ball this season, unfortunetly your report doesn't give me much hope.

The key to the season, as some have pointed out in metioning these are only 7-7 drills, is going to be the OL. If we can give enough of a threat in the running game, Our passing game should be lethal. The key to both imo will be the offensive line's ability to open up holes and protect the QB.

Then why the hell was he second team all-Big Ten his junior year? Just throwin' him a bone because he was a Junior? No, that's not it. Maybe you could explain that to me.
