right now, it really doesn't look like any team will go undefeated. i would say that usc and the ou/texas winner have the best shot due to their conferences, but i would be shocked if any other team goes undefeated. It looks like we're going to have a whole big mess of 1 and 2 loss teams. This of course will have everyone screaming for a playoff, which sounds good...until you consider how it could completely render the michigan game useless.

let's say in a given year we roll until the game undefeated (and there is an 8 team playoff)...well then even if we get our ass whooped we are still guaranteed a playoff berth.

a playoff sounds very enticing....but i would rather have controversy and the michigan game mean everything, then have no controversy but have the michigan game be nothing more than a trivial formality.

West Virginia is the best team in a really bad confrence. They could very very easily do what Miami did in making themselves look like men among boys fo the better part of 10 years and go undefeated. I think that WVU losing to USC by 42 in the National Championship could do more for some kind of change in the BCS than any controversy. I for one don't want to see WEST VIRGINIA in the title game... it pains me to even think about it.

I have a hard time imagining WVU beating both MD and Va Tech. BC will give them a fight in the Big East as well.

College Football has a way of weeding teams out. There will be no undefeated teams this season, not even WV, Fresno State, choklahoma, TexAss, Cryami, Utah. No one. It doesn't look like it right now but teams play over there heads, a key player has a bad game, injuries, turnovers. I just don't think there looks to be a dominant team out there.

Honestly, I don't see why everybody is jonesing for a playoff. So what if there isn't an undefeated team. The season is long enough. Also, if there was a playoff in 2002, I don't know if we would have been national champions. An extra two games w/ Top 10 teams-we used up our quota of lucky breaks that. 15-0 would have been insane-and losing a game in the playoffs would not have been out of the question. We played the #1 team, kicked their ass and settled the matter-why give Iowa or USC, who had losses, a shot at us?

mili, suppose there was an 8 team playoff in either '96 or '02. in both cases, the michigan game would have no meaning. because an osu loss would still keep us in the top eight, and a michigan win wouldn't get them into the top eight (maybe in '02). it's like playing baseball games in late september after you've already clinched the division. they don't mean [censored].

The Michigan game means EVERYTHING even if Ohio State is 0-10 going in. So you can't tell me that just because Ohio State would make the playoff either way that the Michigan game would mean nothing. But that aside, I would HATE to see a playoff system in college football. Every game is like a playoff game the way it is set up. How exciting would the 2002 season have been with a playoff system? A loss to Purdue or Illinois or Michigan wouldn't have hurt that bad except for pride. I love the fact that the playoffs in college football start in September and that sometimes there is no clear cut #1, like last year. It is almost obvious who the top 2 teams in the country are every year. Last year it was USC and LSU, everybody knew it going into the Bowls and they were obviously right. The BCS just messed up. The BCS is flawed, but I like it a lot better this year. If there was a playoff, anything more than 4 teams or a championship game AFTER the bowls would ruin college football.

I've explained this ad nauseum in the past, but I'll try yet again. The Michigan game would never been meaningless in a playoff scenario, because the result of the game would determine our seeding in the playoffs, provided we even still qualified. And as for Michigan maybe not making it even with a win in The Game, well then maybe they should lose three games or more before The Game to put them out of contention in the first place. And even if both us and Michigan were not in playoff position by the time The Game rolled around (e.g., both of us were 7-3), The Game would still be The Game, period. Besides, playoffs will have 16 teams (like in divisions I-AA, II, and III), not 8, so Michigan would still have a shot after losing The Game.
