Torrence happy to have offer from OSU
Quote:

By Todd Porter
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITER
CANTON TWP. - Who knew a cell phone could be so strong? After Devon Torrence read the text message, he felt the weight of the college football world lifted off his shoulders.
“Devon,” the message from Ohio State Head Coach Jim Tressel read, “we would be honored to have you as a Buckeye. We have a scholarship for you.”
Torrence won’t delete the message from his phone.
“Reading that felt great,” Torrence said. “It was a tremendous relief.”
Torrence may well be the only Stark County football player Ohio State offers this year. The only other area player the Buckeyes are looking at is Massillon linebacker Andrew Dailey. But OSU has an abundance of young linebackers on the roster and it isn’t likely to offer a linebacker this early.
But Torrence is projected as a cornerback in college. He was one of the county’s best running backs two years ago. Torrence is also a nationally ranked high school baseball player.
He would play baseball and football for Ohio State if he accepts Tressel’s offer.
Former Canton South two-sport standout Ronnie Bourquin was the Big Ten Player of the Year in baseball. He was just drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the second round of the baseball draft.
“That helps,” Torrence said. “It’s not like Ohio State is a bad baseball school, but when someone from your high school gets drafted from Ohio State, it shows you can be from anywhere and get drafted.”
Baseball or football, which is his first love?
Torrence said it depends on which season it is. He is playing summer baseball and will start to get in football shape in a few weeks. He could make a verbal commitment early before his senior season.
“I’m going to make a decision whenever I feel ready,” Torrence said. “But this is the offer I’ve been waiting for.”
College football insiders believe Torrence is leaning toward Ohio State. He said he’d like to take his NCAA-allotted three visits among four schools (Penn State, North Carolina State, Arizona State and Florida).
Torrence has been offered by most major programs. Michigan has not offered him.
“They wanted me to come to their camp and I didn’t go,” Torrence said.
He was an invited guest of the Wolverines last fall in Michigan Stadium for the Ohio State game. Torrence watched from the Michigan sideline, but made his rooting interests known.
“Well, I guess I was rooting for Ohio State on their sideline,” Torrence said. “But there were other Ohio State fans over there, too. ... It’s safe to say I won’t be going to Michigan.”
TORRENCE GETS TEST SCORE
By virtue of his scholarship offer from Ohio State, Torrence said he is qualified academically to be admitted to Ohio State. Torrence worked hard in the last year to pass his college-entrance exam and even hired former McKinley basketball coach Dave Hoover to help prepare him for the latest test.
Hoover does tutor work and has a track record with preparing student-athletes to pass the ACT test.
“I’m good (academically),” Torrence said. “Working with Dave Hoover helped a lot. I just felt much more comfortable when I took the test after working with him.”
ON TRESSEL
One of the reasons the Ohio State offer was the one Torrence was waiting on is he is a Buckeye fan. And a fan of Tressel’s.
Torrence had an interesting take on a player-coach relationship with Tressel.
“He’s cool,” Torrence said. “He’s isn’t a rah-rah guy, which I like. You talks to you and makes sure you understand. Then if you’re still acting (silly), he’ll go ballistic on you.”

It's been a month and a half with no news on this kid. I actually had to expand my number of threads to two months just to find this thread. I guess no news is good news.

I lot of the talk in the Clifford thread about where Torrence will be playing - I had to double check and make sure he had not committed when I was asleep. I would feel a lot better if someone would put a picture of a padlock in this thread soon.
Any idea when he will anounce a commitment (or his football vs. baseball intentions)?

TRESSEL: Not by Saturday. So, I don't know, I don't give it any thought.

I wouldn't rule out a verbal from Torrence by the end of this month or early Sept.

I think Devon Torrence is the recruit I want most in this class, even a little more than big name players like Ben Martin, Kris O'Dowd, and Joseph Barksdale. I think he's got All-American written all over him. Oh, and I like him at CB more than WR though maybe he can have a Gamble-like role on the team.

I agree I like him more on defense, b/c I like Clifford more on O' as a big tall receiver.

Why can't they both play defense. With the commit of Washington, I think Devon and Cliff both end up on D.
