Who Is the Greatest Buckeye Safety?
Welcome to the thirteenth installment of the "Greatest Buckeyes Ever" poll - this one allows you to vote for the best Buckeye safety. Every Saturday, we will post a poll on "Who's the Greatest Buckeye" at each of the positions. The last poll, head coach, will open on the day of THE GAME, and close on December 30th. By New Years Day, we will have the Buckeye Planet All-Time Buckeye Team.

All players selected for the poll will be from the "modern era", which we have more-or-less arbitrarily determined to have begun with the hiring of Woody Hayes in 1951. However, there will be special polls for the current Buckeyes and older Buckeye stars, where you will be allowed to choose amongst such greats as Les Horvath, Vic Janowicz, Chic Harley, etc.

Please vote on each poll, if you can. Also, please note that each poll will allow you to vote at least twice, as we would like to compile a first and second team. If you vote for "other", please let us know your selection(s) by setting forth the name(s) in a post.

Polls will be posted as follows:

1. Quarterback (CLOSED - Rex Kern is the first team QB, with Craig Krenzel as the second team selection)
2. Tailback (CLOSED - no surprise: Archie is first team, Eddie is second)
3. Athlete (CLOSED - Paul Warfield and Chris Gamble are first team; Cie Grant and Brian Bashnagel are second)
4. Fullback (CLOSED - Pete Johnson first team and Jim Otis second team)
5. Wide Receiver (CLOSED - Cris Carter and David Boston first team, Michael Jenkins and Joey Galloway second team)
6. Tight End (CLOSED - John Frank first team, Rickey Dudley second team)
7. Offensive Tackle (CLOSED - Orlando Pace, John Hicks, and Korey Stringer first team; Jim Davidson and Chris Ward second team)
8. Offensive Guard (OPEN - Jim Lachey and Jim Parker lead, with Rob Murphy also receiving plenty of votes)
9. Offensive Center (OPEN - LeCharles Bentley and Jeff Uhlenhake lead)
10. Defensive Tackle (OPEN - Dan Wilkinson and Jim Stillwagon lead, with Tim Anderson and Jim Marshall closing in)
11. Defensive End (OPEN - Mike Vrabel and Will Smith lead)
12. Linebacker (OPEN - Chris Spielman leads, with Randy Gradishar, Andy Katzenmoyer, and Tom Cousineau also showing well)
13. Safety (OPEN)
14. Cornerback
15. Kicker
16. Punter
17. Current Buckeyes
18. "Old Time" Buckeyes
19. Head Coach

Note: Most of the candidates were All-American selections: Jack Tatum ('69-'70); Mike Sensibaugh ('70); Tim Fox ('75); Ray Griffin ('77); Damon Moore ('98); Michael Doss ('00-'02); and Will Allen ('03). Vince Skillings was a three-time All Big Ten selection as a DB/S/CB ('78-'80); Todd Bell made the team twice as a LB/S ('79-'80) and Roger Harper once ('92).

yeah, this one was really tough. partially because half the guys on the list i have never seen play. the best (i have seen) are without question damon moore and doss. moore imo was the better all around safety.

moore, doss, fox, and tatum. just wish i knew more about the rest of the list. damn you curse of youth!! *shake fist*

"In 2001, Jim Tressel, head coach of Jack’s Alma Matter, Ohio State University, instituted the “Jack Tatum hit of the week award,” given to the player who had the most impressive collision in a game on a weekly basis. A fine tribute to a man who hit harder than a sledgehammer."

I hadn't heard this. Do they still give out this award?

This is the easiest of any position to choose. There is Jack Tatum-and there is everyone else. He was the scariest hitter ever-because he lived for the hit-he claims (and I believe) that he gave up 2 or 3 ints a year just to jack a dude. coming out of New Jersey in 1967, he was considered the #1 recruit in the nation. I would highly recommend "They Call Me Assassin" and "They Still Call Me Assassi"-also available in a combo edition, which I own-for a realistivc look at both the NFL and Woody's Buckeyes/Woody's personality.

thanks for the info NJ.

the only game i have from that era is the 68 season - 69 rose bowl and i swore that tatum was corner. got mine at walmart for something like 19.97.

i have also seen some clips on buckeye classics, specifically the 68 purdue game, and i swore he was a corner then too. i guess i swear too much, oh-[censored]ing-well.

never knew they moved him to safety at OSU after his soph year, always thought that was an NFL thing.

I found Jack Tatum listed as a CB on the Ohio State athletic site. He was an All-American twice as a CB. Under the rooster in 1968 he was listed as a LB. Jack played safety in the NFL but I am pretty sure he was a corner in college.
