Which was the bigger loss...

  1. Losing 14 players to the NFL
  2. Losing Mark D'Antonio
I believe that losing D'antonio hurt worse. Snyder's ability to make adjustments is not in the same galaxy as D'antonio's.

The sad part is, D'antonio seems to have been a much better DC than he is a Head Coach.

Now we're left with a DC that is much less capable than MD was and an OC that, for lack of a better word, SUCKS!

D'antonio's ability covered for Bollman. Snyder is not up to that Herculean task. Face facts: Two of the members of last year's awful OL are now STARTING in the NFL.

We have utilized our talent poorly on offense for years, and now it appears that our defense will fall under that heading as well. And all this in a year when we clearly have less talent than in the previous 2 years.

yikes

Idunno. I think the defense did a decent job tonight. I won't say it was stellar. For the most part, they kept Wisky pretty well bottled up. THey just allowed a few long drives (two of which I refuse to accept because the Zebras kept them alive--I know it's no excuse). At least they had some fire to them tonight. They FOUGHT. that was missing last week. We'll get Fox back next week, and teams will be forced to respect our secondary a bit more. That will lead to more stops by the front 7. Remember just how dominant a running game Wisky has. They could have hurt us VERY badly. We didn't come out unscathed, but we did a respectable job.

Did you mean to post this on the bucknuts free board?

Most of the doom and gloom is happening over there...

What did Snyder do wrong tonight? Hell the defense tired out and that was evident late...but a series of 3 and outs will do that to a defense.

Offensively, the playcalling was fine...the execution was horrid.

I agree that we did a "respectable" job on defense.

With D'Antonio we weren't respectable, we were dominant.

I think the defense did a decent job today. I do miss D'antonio but I dont think that was a difference in this game.

Speaking of D'antonio how the hell did Army score 48 points against his D at UC. Did he lose his whole first team or what?

Dave Biddle gave props to JT and Snyder today for their calls...I agree they did a decent job

Said Zwick had a horrible game by missing so many receivers...I agree

Said Bollman is feeling heat but won't be dismissed because he is JTs guy

D'Antonio also had the luxury of serveral experienced players who became 1st rounders.

Coach Snyder may have had a bad game against NW - but he was not the issue yesterday.

I think losing the 14 players to the NFL hurt, but losing D'antonio hurt even more. My reasoning is this: If a team is young and inexperienced they still should be able to win with a steller game plan and great coaching. Well right now it doesnt seem like our D is getting the good coaching part, because we seem to be regressing as the year goes on instead of improving. Even a mediocre team talent wise can play beyond its means with outstanding coaching, and we supposedly have superior albeit young talent, that just doesnt seem to be able to step it up.

Man osugrad21, GET OUTTA MY HEAD and stop stealin my thoughts haha . You are sooo right. The defense did a good job as a whole.

Good offensive plays were called at times but on alot of occasions when the short routes were wide open the QB (due to lack of maturity and bad decisions) threw to the longer routes.

I dunno if I can defend Bollman though anymore. Thats a hard one. Somehow the coaches do have to get through to these youngs kids soon but they are young and you have to keep that in mind.

It is true that we are young, but that being the case how come so many other teams are able to win with youth and we arent??? Scum has a TRUE FRESHMAN starting at RB and QB, and not only are they winning , but they are showing improvement every week!!! If the same could be said for us I wouldnt mind losing as long as we were getting better, but we arent. The difference between other teams youth and ours is simple in my opinion. Other teams are getting effective coaching from thier assistant coaches, which helps the young players develop and learn while they play. Here at OSU it seems like the coaching just isnt there, instead of getting better our young players seem to just remain stagnant and in Zwicks case and a few other players, they actually seem to be regressing...no matter what Tressel says. If he truely believes that a QB who threw for 15 of 31 for 128 yards with 0 TD's or 0 INT's is the main man for the job then we have to go with him. The only improvements in Zwicks play seem to be he isnt throwing INT's anymore. But he is taking more sacks and throwing the ball away less, he is missing wide open receivers, he just doesnt seem to be able to compose himself and establish a flow to the game.

Yup. they've got true frosh starting at Qb and Rb.

they've also got an O-line that reads like this:

Senior, Senior, 5th year Senior, Senior Sophomore. Not a soul under 6'4 or 300 lb. Put our guys behind that line and I think we'd be undefeated right now.

For comparison: our O-line. Jr, So, Jr, Sr, So. three of whom are first-time starters, and the sole senior is a former walk-on. Nothing against Kne, he's earned his position... but that doesn't speak well for our depth on the line.

How about we give Snyder a little bit more time before we judge him against D'Antonio. In 2001, D'Antonio's defense gave up 20+ points 5 times, and 30+ twice more. And this was with all the draftees, many of whom were inexperienced. The next year? 2 games over 20, with the same players. Why? More experience from the coaches and players.

And I would argue that the BEST time to break in a new DC is with new players. It allows them to grow up together. Though the first year may be rough, it makes the next few easier. Fox going down doesn't help, however.

And I would argue that the BEST time to break in a new DC is with new players. It allows them to grow up together. Though the first year may be rough, it makes the next few easier. Fox going down doesn't help, however.
I agree, It does take a while for players to get used to a new coach. We will judge Snyder on what he does next year. Though I will say that D'Antonio called some of the best defensive games I have ever seen, and I was disappointed when he left.

Bollman on the other hand has had more than enough time to prove himself.....

My point was more about D'Antonio than about Snyder.

Few here would argue that D'Antonio was a master of half-time adjustments. It really doesn't matter which year you look at, it is clear that our defensive performance was markedly better in the 2nd half, especially the 3rd quarter.

This year is very different, and that is best illustrated by when in the course of the game each opponent has had their longest drive of the day...

Cincinnatti had their 4 longest drives of the day on their 1st 4 possessions of the 2nd half.

Marshall had their longest drive of the day on their 2nd possession of the 2nd half.

NCstate hd their longest drive of the day on their 2nd possession of the 2nd half.

Northwestern had their longest drive of the day on the 3rd possession of the 2nd half, and their 2nd longest on their 1st drive of the 2nd half.

Wisconsin had their longest drive of the day on the 1st possession of the 2nd half.

Does this sound like the defensive coordinator is the master of 2nd half adjustments that D'Antonio was? Of course not. Does it mean that Snyder is not a good defensive coordinator? Of course not. It simply means that he's no Mark D'Antonio when it comes to half-time adjustments.

The sad part is that it appears that D'Antonio MIGHT be going the way of Buddy Ryan: Great DC, Pedestrian HC.
