Buckeyes get Pettrey

Raceland All-State kicker Aaron Pettrey had college scholarship offers but will attend Ohio State even though he won't sign with the Buckeyes until next January. He will be "grayshirted" next fall.

"It really hasn't sunk in yet," he told the Ashland Daily Independent.

Pettrey, who holds the state record with a 58-yard field goal, will take classes at Ohio State in the fall and is expected to compete for the starting job in 2005.

The grayshirting process involves recruiting a player out of high school and promising him a scholarship but asking him to wait to enroll full time in school until the second semester.

He definitely has some "big" shoes to fill. Losing Nuge is gonna hurt. Hopefully Pettrey can ease the pain.

Nuge will be missed but I hope his kickoffs improve next year. I just wonder if he had some sort of injury because he did not have the distance at the end of the season that we saw in '02 or early '03. I am not a big fan of that pooch kickoff.

It seems Pettrey has a big leg.

RACELAND State record-setting football player Aaron Pettrey of Raceland is also in select company nationally.

Known for his multi-threat ability, Pettrey is one of 50 high school players across the country to be named an Old Spice Red Zone Player of the Year.

The program recognizes individuals who exemplify leadership and elevate their play and that of their teammates, especially in the football field's Red Zone. Winners were chosen from a pool of nominees representing more than 4,500 participating schools.

"It's great,'' Pettrey said. "I didn't even think I would be in the running. It's a really nice honor.''

Pettrey, a first team All-State selection, set a state record by completing just under 72 percent of his career passes. He also put his name at the top of the Kentucky record book with a 58-yard field goal against Berea.

Pettrey has verbally committed to Ohio State as a kicker.

"He's a fabulous player,'' said Raceland coach Randy Vanderhoof. "Aaron developed into probably the best quarterback that ever played in this area, and the best kicker, too.''

Pettrey, a 6-foot-3 senior, threw for 5,200 yards in two seasons and kicked 24 career field goals. Last season, he passed and ran for more than 3,000 yards. In the Berea game, he kicked two field goals of more than 50 yards.

As one of the 50 Red Zone Players of the Year, Pettrey will be recognized in a full-page congratulatory announcement in USA Today on Feb. 5.

He also receives an awards package including a logo fleece, a plaque and a medal.

"It's a great individual award for Aaron,'' Vanderhoof said. "Then again, we look at it as a great team award for Raceland High School and the Raceland Rams.''

The Red Zone Player of the Year program is sponsored annually by Procter & Gamble, the maker of Old Spice Red Zone Deodorant.

Pettrey is currently grey-shirting and was at the scUM game Saturday.

He is hoping to enroll in January. He took classes at Ashland CC this fall and is hoping to transfer those credits to tOSU. But there might be some delay in the transfer and it could push his tOSU enrollment until the Spring Qtr (i.e. Antonio Pittman).

He will battle Huston (if he gets a sixth yr.), Jonathan Skeete and 25-year-old (S. African) freshman walk-on Ryan Pretorious. FWIW- Coach Conley seems to think Pretorious is the future and he seems to be down on Skeete.

If Pettrey ends up winning the kicking job, how much do you want to bet that they run a few fakes and put the ball in his hands?

You would think that but keep in mind that Nugent was also a Quarterback in high school and how often did they ever run tricks with him? But I guess when you have a guaranteed three points from Nuge why pass them up.

Yeah, but Nuge ran the wishbone at 'Ville. They didn't put it up in the air much. It sounds like Pettrey actually aired it out at times.

tOSU is still working to get his grades transferred over so he could start the Jan. Quarter (he got all A's at the CC college he went to). If they can't get him in Jan., he will enroll in March just in time for Spring Practice like Pittman and Trapasso last year.

Got to watch Nuge, Skeete, & Pretorious kicking field goals before the Wisky game. After Nuge kicked his usual perfect routine, both Skeete & Pretorious kicked FG's from the same distance, one after the other- going back 3-5 yards after every kick. They matched field goal for field goal from 25 to 40 yards out (or 35 to 50 yard field goals). Skeete maxed at 53 yards. Pretorious stopped after a 55-yard FG.

We're as deep at kicker as we are at ANY position on the field. If that's our depth WITHOUT Huston and Pettrey, I think we'll pull through the Nuge era juuuuust fine. We have two kickers on our bench better than the majority of D-1's kickers!

That's great that these guys have strong legs. However, that's only a small part of the battle. They have to be able to handle the pressure of the kicks as well as the oncoming rush.

Also, people need to remember that Nugent struggled pretty badly his freshman year. Personally, I'd take a year of so-so kicking game to follow with 3 more Nuge-like years.

So don't be too hard on Skeete/Pretorious/Huston/Pettrey if they struggle at first.
