Well, first, i think that they are apple to oranges.. not only was one inside and the other an outside backer, they play with diffrent styles. Homan is more like a Hawk, than is Little Animal.

Secondly, As for the hype.. i tend to agree with you there. I think James found himself in the right place at the right time last year more often than not, now this year will be his true test, was he lucky with the defelcted picks our are his insticts really that good? time will tell, i hope he has another great year. he definatley put some time in the weight room this off season.

I dont know that one 'lucks' his way in to 5 picks. I don't think that's what you're implying, but I do think that maybe you're selling short the fact that the reason Lil Animal was in position has a lot to do with coaching, and his coachability, along with his talent. I'll give ya that you can't coach a player in to position to pick off a tipped pass, but the fact that he had 5 picks and 115 tackles - to me - establishes he didn't "find" himself in position, he was there because he was supposed to be.

I'm willing to say that this group will be better than Hawk & Co. JL is/will be close to AJ. Freeman and Grant are more athletic than Schlegs and Carp. And as bkb said, the depth is better this year.

Sorry but Carpenter was fairly athletic and probably more so than Freeman.

Yeah, Carpenter was athletic, but I'd give the nod to Freeman who is a step faster at about the same size (Carp was 250's, Freeman 240s)

HUBRIDER has scUM sympathies
All talent and meaurables aside, my question is leadership. Schleg had his limitations but he was unquestionably a great leader for that D. My fear is that we will not of that confident leadership and someone you look to in the huddle. That was Mitchell's contribution last year and hopefully someone will step up this year.

All of the comparisons are well and good but Bobby Carpenter would be better compared to Vern Gholston than Curtis Terry or Larry Grant. He was much more effective coming off the edge as the Leo than in pass coverage. Roaming around in zone wasnt his best asset, terrorizing ballcarriers and QB's in the backfield was. I believe the fact that we have 6 LB'ers who could start might ultimately make this LBing corps stronger overall than the '05 group. Individual talents would still be the '05 group though.

agreed, you really have to compair lb'ers to guys who played the same position. additionally you also have to take into account the way in which the lb'ers were used. the 05 and 06 core were utilized differently because of the strengths and weaknesses of the defenses they played on. imo that has to be factored in as well.

i have jumped all over the defending freeman and jl bandwagon from pre season last year onward. infact i might be the only person on this board who has argued that jl played very well in the 05 scum game in relief for carp. but my unbiased assessment of both players cuts pretty deep to the bone to be perfectly honest. i can write up my assesment of each lb'er who saw significant playing time last year if you really want as i have watched every game from last year (with the exception of the nc game) 15+ times. but i guarantee you won't like it.

personally i find it interesting that people are now compairing freeman to hawk and carp currently when it felt like the majority of the board at midseason was demanding his replacement as a starter last year. its very possible the persons doing the compairing are different. i haven't gone back to the freeman thread to look. but boy has a few cold months changed the vocal perception.

It's the same every year. We are all geeked up for the season and that skews our memories.

Freeman. Solid player, but hasn't put it all together for entire season. He played well in the NC game...what else?

Little Animal. More than solid, is well coached, but he still hasn't wowed me yet. But that's just my opinion. (I know he didn't play the same position as JL, but Hawk had that wow factor)

Larry Grant. Hasn't started much until now!

Yet these guys are better than the 05 group.

I was 'wowed' by him for sure, i just think this will the year to see if it was a fluke season or not. I agree with BKB in that you don't luck yourself into that many picks, but in the same breath we'll see this year how good his instincts are.

I'd just like to see some more tackles for loss. I think if he works on his ability to get into the backfield consistently and make plays there, he'll become great.
