2007 Fall Practice Tidbits

So, does Herron redshirt? Or do we carry two capable running backs through their careers in the same year of eligibility?

I don't see Torrence redshirting, so we just move the problem to next year. But I agree that I don't see the reps unless we run two back sets with Saine as a slot receiver.

What gets interesting is next year when we have at least five RBs on the roster - somebody gonna be unhappy. Time for Mo Wells to step up.

I was thinking about Torrence coming in too, and I don't see how the Bucks can keep 5 RB's on the roster. Of course, if Torrence does redshirt, both Wells will probably be gone by the start of his freshman season. But, if he doesn't redshirt, then there will be a log jam in the backfield.

By the way, any chance at all that the Bucks are looking at Torrence to play the SAM or WILL on defense?

Otherwise, we have an embarassment of riches, assuming Saine, Herron, and Torrence are as good as we're hearing. Our 5th string running back in 2008 could be a starter on most Big 10 rosters!!! Sick. Just plain sick.

Pretorius is the starting kicker, if there is a game tomorrow (As per tressel)? Somebody had a post on Ozone about it. Osugrad, any insight on this?

WHOA. I would take that with a grain of salt.

I think it's pretty rare for a full year's starter to lose his job in the offseason.

They had Pretorius on the new this evening. Kid was positively glowing about the fall session he is having and how much he has improved. This change might stick.

Since we can't do a variation of "Nuuuuuge" or "Huuuuuu", should the PA play the beginning of Duran Duran's "Notorious" while the fans shout "Pre-, Pre-, Pretorius"?

No I got a better Idea. They should play Duran Duran's Notorious whenever Pretorius is about to kick. The fans should shout Pre, pre, Pretorius.

Then again playing any Duran Duran music during a football game would be shameful. Disgard my idea of playing Notorius whenever Pretorius kicks. It's a bad idea.

In other job news, sophomore linebacker Ross Homan was working with the first team defense, next to James Laurinaitis and Larry Grant, during the practice we were able to watch today before the scrimmage, taking the place of junior Marcus Freeman.

In injury news, running back Beanie Wells looked good during drills after missing the scrimmage with an ankle sprain. But receivers Ray Small and Albert Dukes were in uniform but held out of practice, while linebacker Curtis Terry also remained sidelined, a boot on his right foot to protect his ankle sprain.

Is that the ghost of Ted Ginn? No, that's just Malcolm Jenkins wearing the No. 7 during today's kick scrimmage, as several jersey numbers were flopped around as players shifted sides.In return game news, Brian Hartline and Malcolm Jenkins handled the punt returns in the scrimmage, while Jenkins, Anderson Russell, James Scott and Boom Herron tried the kick returns, though Brandon Saine did touch the ball on a kick return reverse. Ray Small had those jobs in hand before his injury.
And in possible captain news, four seniors met Tressel at midfield before the kick scrimmage. They were right tackle Kirk Barton, Terry, Grant and fullback Dionte Johnson. Tressel said captains will be named by Friday, and if he wants to avoid junior captains, those four are the most logical choices for a very thin senior class.

BONUS UPDATE, 10 P.M.: OK, just finished my notes for tomorrow and the thing about the nickel defense didn't make it, so here it is. When the Buckeyes went to nickel during practice today, Malcolm Jenkins, their top corner, dropped back as a safety with Kurt Coleman, while corners Chimdi Chekwa, Shaun Lane and regular safety Anderson Russell moved up and pressed the receivers in coverage. Interesting. Those are two pretty good ballhawks back playing center field in Coleman and Jenkins, and Russell has enough speed to cover a receiver up tight.

?I like having two pretty solid kickers,? he said. ?I?d rather have, now, at least one very consistent one and I don?t know that we?re there yet.?

To be honest, I don't like the sound of that. Remember, JT is doing the talking.

Tressel said that if the season started today, Russell and Maurice Wells would return kickoffs.

And, I REALLY don't like the idea of a guy with a previous knee injury, whose health is paramount to the defense's success, returning kicks. I'd like to hope/guess that the head coach is trying to light a fire under some of the other guys.

Blocked kicks? No worries

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State had three field goals blocked on protection breakdowns during a kick scrimmage Wednesday. But with so many second-stringers seeing action, coach Jim Tressel decided not to worry until he could identify the culprit.
"If the guy in there protecting is someone we won't see the rest of his life, we'll sleep," Tressel said. "If it's someone we're counting on, we'd better get it squared away."
