Ohio State football freshmen can expect to see playing time

Sunday, August 26, 2007 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- By the middle of his freshman season - Greg Dempsey predicts that's when receiver Dane Sanzenbacher will be playing for Ohio State.
It looks like Sanzenbacher's old high school coach at Toledo Central Catholic isn't bold enough.
Sanzenbacher could be playing on Ohio State's first offensive snap of the season Saturday, thanks to Ray Small's ankle injury, stepping in as the slot receiver next to Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline with the first team against Youngstown State.

BONUS UPDATE, 10 P.M.: OK, just finished my notes for tomorrow and the thing about the nickel defense didn't make it, so here it is. When the Buckeyes went to nickel during practice today, Malcolm Jenkins, their top corner, dropped back as a safety with Kurt Coleman, while corners Chimdi Chekwa, Shaun Lane and regular safety Anderson Russell moved up and pressed the receivers in coverage. Interesting. Those are two pretty good ballhawks back playing center field in Coleman and Jenkins, and Russell has enough speed to cover a receiver up tight.
that's interesting...

Doing the Shuffle: The OSU coaching staff has been shuffling their personnel a bit as fall camp winds down. Redshirt freshman Grant Swartz has been switched from safety to wide receiver. Additionally, freshman Devon Torrence has moved from defensive back to wide receiver.
"It's just a matter of trying to put players in positions where they will be able to help us the fastest," said defensive backs coach Paul Haynes.
Another Law Firm: OSU running backs coach Dick Tressel likes to quip that his top running backs of Chris Wells and Maurice Wells form the law firm of Wells and Wells. Wide receivers coach Darrell Hazell thinks he has a litigious pair himself.
"I like that," said Hazell when a reporter suggested that Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline might form the law firm of Brian and Brian.

The 2007 Freshman Class

All things considered it's been a very good camp and pre-season for the incoming freshman class. One has to ask what has made this class so special. Names like Herron, Saine, Heyward, Washington, Clifford, Sanzenbacher, Oliver, Torrence, Pentello, Rolle, Hines, Scott, Evege, Blankenship, and Thomas are proving themselves daily. More than half may be seeing some playing time for the Buckeyes this year.

Here are few rhetorical questions that we may want to react to:

Why are these kids so energized? What has made them so motivated? Why have some cracked the starting lineup? Has the loss of Ginn, Gonzo, and Pittman created opportunities that would have prevented them from even being considered? Is there a catalyst player or players in the mix?
Or, Is it that this is a very talented class?

I think the last few questions may be worth exploring as we ponder what is going on here. Opportunity, yes. Talent, yes. Catalyst - absolutely yes, this is were a team becomes a team and players are enegergized by others with high hopes, goals, and motivation. They all want to play football, they all have proved that coming into this school. What happens when they see Saine, Clifford, Torrence, Washington and Sanzenbacher getting reps and advancing? IMO, that energizes everyone, even the Sophs, Jrs, and Srs are motivated by that. This team has energy, this team is motivated, this team is hungry and wants the big prize at the end.

When you have a collection of exceptionally talented kids, the thing that pulls them together and that makes them a cohesive unit is leadership and the will to be the best team in the land. I can see that with this team and although I'd like to think a highly energized freshman class is solely the answer, IMO, the "catylast" out there may be the example that a few of these kids have set for all to be motivated by.

A hyper aggressive frosh class could be a catalyst. I think it also has a lot to do with a non SR laden team.

Lou Holtz said that the JR year was when players cared the most about winning. Frosh year its just PT, Soph year its about starting, JR year about winning and SR year about individual stuff. Now obviously thats a pretty sweeping generalization but I think it has a nugget of truth in there.

Looking at our 2002 team you had a super freshman class injecting a lot of talent and enthusiasim into a team thats had a realativly small number of SR's. The bulk of that teams starters were all JR's.

IMO the perfect storm for a team having "it" is the freshman class transfusion, a JR dominated team, modest expectations and a collective chip on their shoulder from a percieved lack of respect(has to be genuine not faked a la 2002 Miami).

1954, 1957, 1968, 1979 and 2002 all had these elements to some degree. Lets hope 2007 can be added to that list.

I was reading "Buckeye Madness" recently and there were several stories about the "Super Sophs" as frosh -- Jax' commented reminded me of those tales. If this freshman class puts itself in the same position as that freshman class, there will be A LOT of happy OSU fans.

I'm actually a little disappointed with Devon moving to Offense.

I thought he could be a very special corner.

I'm actually a little disappointed with Devon moving to Offense.

I thought he could be a very special corner.
He still may. It may not have been a specific injury to a specific player that precipitated the move, but there are a lot more reps at receiver right now than there are in the logjam at DB.

Next year he could go back. It has happened.
