For whom the Bell tolls
Dorian Bell posted an incredible stat line as a tailback in Gateway's 49-7 drubbing of Norwin this past weekend.
According to Mike White of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Bell only had two carries for the game, but they both went for touchdowns, each over 80 yards in length. Bell averaged an amazing 84 yards per carry.
Bell currently averages a hair below 23 yards per rush, and he could challenge for the state record of highest average per carry, set in 1957 by Lewistown's Fred Stoicheff, who averaged 14.52 yards per carry on 69 attempts, according to the Pennsylvania Football News Resource Guide. (Note: it is not known if there is a minimum rushes requirement to set this record.)

Great news (and not surprising) that both Corey and Dorian were named to the U.S. Army All-American game.

Should be a good experience for both and nice to have more representation for Ohio State.

You put the best at a position, regardless of what that player's "normal" position is. The last 5-star RB we got out of Florida has had a so-so at best career here, so to blow off the possibility of Bell getting a shot at RB just because Berry is coming here is flat out wrong.

Congrats to Dorian, and who is to say Gamble would not have made it as a WR given a year and a half to really concentrate on his pass catching and route running skills.

Off topic, I know, but Ginn, Gonzo and Gamble all ended up playing different positions than where they were projected as HS seniors (and ended up doing at least decently )

Bell is a game changer at linebacker. Put him at outside backer and send him after the QB! We need game changers on defense! He will compete for starting time as a true freshman.

McDowell plays nation's 3rd-ranked team tough, but falls

Posted by Joshua Funk October 11, 2008 02:18AM

MILLCREEK TOWNSHIP, Pa. - McDowell quarterback AJ Fenton took some postgame congratulations from some students still hanging around Gus Anderson Field Friday night. Fenton's Trojans had just wrapped up hosting the #3-ranked team in the nation, the Gateway Gators, the first time a nationally-ranked Pennsylvania team played a game in Erie County since 2000.
"I think the games against McKeesport and this one (Gateway) earned us some respect," the Wisconsin-bound Fenton said. "But we want more than respect - we want to start winning these big games."
McDowell nearly did win - cutting the Gateway lead to 24-18 with 3:14 left in the game, but Brian Williams' 77-yard touchdown run ended any hope of a McDowell upset, as the Gators (7-0) escaped with a hard-fought 30-18 victory over the Trojans (4-3).
Quote:
Aiding the Gators was the presence of Dorian Bell, who sat out the first half for undisclosed reasons. His first four carries of the second half yielded 42 rushing yards and four Gateway first downs.
After forcing a McDowell punt, and after Kalkstein (129 pass yards, TD, INT) connected on a 41-yard pass, Bell scored on a two-yard touchdown run to make it 14-3.

Top recruit

Dorian Bell, outside linebacker
Gateway HS (Monroeville, Pa.)
Verbal commitment: Ohio State

Gateway High School produced a good linebacker last year in No. 8 inside 'backer Shayne Hale (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway), but it one-upped itself in 2009 with Bell. When we first evaluated him last spring, we were in awe of his speed and explosiveness, but his size was a bit of a concern, particularly for his intense style of play. Fast forward six months later, and Bell is tipping the scales at a rock-solid 220 pounds and is just as fast and disruptive.

While he still has some room for added bulk and strength to improve his shedding, Bell is pretty close to the complete package as an outside linebacker prospect. The future Buckeye has great range, closing speed and change of direction skill when pursuing in space. Between the tackles, Bell shows equally impressive foot-quickness and agility sidestepping the trash. His excellent blitzing and coverage skills add to his impressive, well-rounded resume on defense.

"Dorian's strengths are his speed, athleticism and physical nature," said Gateway High School head coach Terry Smith. "He combines the rare ability to be physical enough to play with the interior lineman while fast and athletic enough to cover wide receivers. He's also got a great feel for finding the football."

There is no letdown in his mental game either, Bell is fierce competitor who plays with a very high motor. Fast and physical is the only way he knows how to play the game, but at times that intensity can lead to him overrunning plays.

"If there is a weakness, he needs to slow down a little to not over-pursue to the football," said Smith. "He is fast enough to get to the ball but has to protect cutback alleys better."
