Gateway storms over Penn Hills into Class AAAA final

Gateway has firepower at every offensive skill position and a formidable offensive line. Last night, the player known more for his defense provided a big spark running the ball.
Senior Dorian Bell, an Ohio State recruit ranked among the top 10 linebackers in the country, rushed for 121 yards on 13 attempts.
But maybe no one should be surprised by Bell's offensive performance. He came into the game with 723 yards rushing and an 11.9 yards-per-carry average.
Bell took his offensive performance in stride, preferring to talk more about the team.
"I'd just say we know how to win," Bell said.
But Smith had high praise for the 6-foot-1, 220-pound Bell, who also had nine tackles on defense.
"Dorian Bell is one of the top five players in the country," Smith said. "He just does whatever we want from him. Hands down, he's the best player in the state."

Dorian seems like a player who just knows how to win. A guy who's always in position to make the plays his team needs to win. You gotta love it.

I think Spitler will start next year. Sabino could play outside for a year if the coaches want to get him on the field that badly.

My bet is that you'll see Moeller at the weakside, Sabino in the middle and Homan at the strongside, with Rolle, Spitler and Sweat being the backups. Bell could easily sneak into the top deep while Hines stays at safety/star position.

What Scouts Inc. looks for: Savvy blitzers who can disguise the pressure, anticipate the snap and make themselves thin when needed. Explosive first step and the ability to accelerate to full speed quickly are vital. Needs to find the correct seam at full speed, attack from different angles and possess good bend with hand technique coming off the edge. Best blitzers come with reckless abandon and deliver high-impact, tempo-changing hits.

1. Dorian Bell (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway)

The future Buckeye plays in a system that allows him to attack freely off the edge and fits his physical tools perfectly. With his great size, speed and closing burst, Bell is almost impossible to block at the high school level. He can beat tackles to the corner with his great timing and first-step quickness or use his good arm extension and hand technique to get under their pads with a rip. Bell can also hurt you as a blitzer with his raw power when isolated on a back in pass protection. He is extremely tough as well as savvy at his craft.

I would bet on Bell playing the weakside here and roaming around rather than being tied to a TE or one of the backs at SAM. He has the speed and agility to be a force like AJ Hawk was at the WILL position. I also think he will be an "every down" linebacker that we don't need to replace on passing downs unlike Homan.

Dorian is a finalist for the high school version of the Butkus Award

Dorian is Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Player of the Year

Gateway's Dorian Bell played in a national all-star football game in Hawaii last week, along with other highly touted players from other states.

"You could see his play just separated himself from the other linebackers," said Gateway coach Terry Smith, who was an assistant in the game.

In other words, Honolulu was a lot like Western Pennsylvania for Bell. His play this season separated him from every player in the area.

Bell, a senior linebacker/running back, is the Post-Gazette Player of the Year. The award takes into consideration all players in the WPIAL and City League.

Bell was recruited to play linebacker, but said there is a possibility he might play strong safety, depending on his weight.

Dorian allegedly has the speed to play SS. Maybe a Kevin Ellison (USC) type? Now if we could only find a 230 lb. FS Seriously though, I am hoping he stays at LB. But with all the talent coming back at the position, he would kill from the "Star" position.
