PAINESVILLE - He wore a sweater vest.

Harvey wide receiver Chris Fields dressed for his future as an Ohio State Buckeye, covering himself in Jim Tressel karma for his signing ceremony this afternoon in the Harvey library.

Fields was nattily attired in scarlet and gray. He wore a diamond plaid sweater vest, long sleeve gray shirt, OSU tie, gray slacks and a scarlet block ?O' baseball cap.

"It came into my head to wear a sweater vest to honor coach Tressel. I like wearing sweater vests," Fields said. "I like him. He's down to earth."

Fields said Tressel visited his home for brunch Saturday and talked about Fields' future, about which Fields has several ideas cooking.

Two ideas might give OSU fans reason to pause.

Fields said he is hoping to enter the NFL draft in three years.

He might also turn pro sooner in another sport - baseball. Fields, a highly regarded center fielder, said if he is drafted in June, he would consider a dual career, playing minor-league baseball in the summer and OSU football in the fall, as current Buckeye Devon Torrence has done in the Houston Astros organization.

"If it's a good possibility, I will leave early because of the [NFL] draft, or if I end up playing baseball, that's another side," Fields said. "I don't know if I'll play baseball for Ohio State, but if I have some minor league looks, I'll keep my options open."

Jim Tressel stopped by the home of Chris Fields a few days ago.

Apparently, Ohio State's football coach rubbed off on Harvey's standout wide receiver more than he ever could have imagined.

The "Block O" hat Fields donned while signing a national letter of intent on Wednesday in his high school's library wasn't something new for an Ohio State signee. The Tressel-esque sweater vest Fields wore ? now that's a different matter.

"It came into my head to actually get a sweater vest," Fields said. "I like it, wearing a sweater vest. I wouldn't want to wear a suit. I'm liking the sweater vest."

It's a good thing, since Fields is probably going to see a lot of sweater vests over the next four years.

Fields didn't say whether Tressel wore his signature sweater vest when he visited the Fields' home earlier this week, a visit more for personal reasons than to check if Fields' allegiance to Ohio State had wavered at all.

"He came through for a little bit and to have a bite to eat," Fields said. "It was real good. He stayed for a few hours and talked about personal things, talked about college, business ..."

The stop left an impression on Fields, which is saying something considering how big of an Ohio State fan Fields was before the house call. The plethora of OSU photos, books and memorabilia that decked out Harvey's library on Wednesday's signing gave him away.

"It was a real honor for him to step into my door," Fields said.

"I had dreamed of meeting him, and there he is at my door.

"He's not like other coaches. I've met a lot of coaches not like him. I feel I can be comfortable four years ? three years maybe ? at Ohio State."

Fields has a great combination of size, speed and shiftiness to become an elite WR. When he learns to become disciplined in his route running, watch out. I look forward to seeing him in S&G for the foreseeable future.

This kid seems like he gets lost in the shuffle after Duron Carter and James Jackson. What are some of his glaring weaknesses, that would make analysts not really mention this kid who has very good speed, athleticism and great hands?

We've heard of Tressel's Army. But a new football recruit brought it to another level.

Before a congregation in the Harvey High School library, a man emerged dressed in the standard-issued Jim Tressel uniform. Chris Fields committed to Ohio State wearing the iconic sweater vest, OSU tie, gray pants and a scarlet Block 'O' hat.

"It came into my head to wear a sweater vest to honor coach Tressel. I like wearing sweater vests," Fields said in an interview with the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "I like him. He's down to earth."

Fields is no stranger to sporting a variety of uniforms, civilian or otherwise. He owns two: one for football, one for baseball.

The Painesville, Ohio native was recruited as a wide receiver but will keep an eye on his baseball career as a center fielder.

well... he didn't run a reported 4.31 40 and his dad's name isn't chris carter. once someone claims he ran a 4.31 40 and his dad legally changes his name im sure the media will be all over him. till then it'll just be us uninformed fans who follow his career with interest .

Thought this would have been posted, but since it never was, I guess I'll do it.

Chris left the Harvey baseball team a few weeks ago to concentrate solely on being a football player at TOSU. I know there's been alot of speculation since his recruitment started about baseball, and Chris himself brought it up on signing day. But, in the end it looks as though Chris has "seen the light" and the great opportunity in front of him. BUCKEYE football 100% !!!!!

Was his team not doing so well? It was my understanding that baseball was a big part of his life and that he could pursue that and be the type of guy being drafted fairly early.

I guess baseball is a part that just won't go away. Chris was back on the diamond with his team yesterday.
