Longo is the type of kid who gets lost when looking at a recruiting class. He does not play at a marquee postition and was not hyped like some other linemen, but he has a nasty streak and great athleticism, he could very well turn into a stud in a few years. It is great to have him in the fold.

Chris Watt, the nation's No. 1 offensive guard prospect according to scout.com, had an offer on the table from Ohio State. The Buckeyes had two spots remaining for linemen, one reserved for five-star Marcus Hall and the second for either Watt or a less-heralded prospect with a long frame.

A three-star to Watt's five, Ohio State commit Sam Longo plugged the small hole in the recruiting class with his massive build.

At 6-foot-6 and 280 pounds, Longo's length translates to either tackle position on the outside of the line. The nation's 26th-ranked tackle according to rivals.com, Longo assumes he'll be a surprise. The Web site deemed him its sleeper of the 25-man class, a prediction that would make many forget about Watt's signing with Notre Dame if it pans out.

I've been told that Longo has a great frame and plenty of athleticism to play on the left side. I'm anxious to see him get on campus and turn some heads. Our entire O line should be a little bit better with the newly acquired depth and increased competition in practice.

If we didn't have Michael Adams I'd bet on Longo ending up something like Eben Britton in a few years. He may still (especially if he redshirts - although that won't help him from a polish perspective), but I'm not sure it happens unless someone else doesn't pan out, which I don't hope for, but you have to believe is a legitimate possibility. I don't see him fitting at guard too well.

He's already a year behind Adams/Shugarts and will be two with a likely redshirt year. Couple that with the fact that none of the '09 O-line commits are definite tackles and I fail to see a reason why Longo couldn't end up at tackle if it is his best position. Also, I don't understand why a redshirt year wouldn't help him from a polish perspective. Seems like an extra year to focus on strength, conditioning and technique could only help in that respect.

Some players need redshirts, some don't. Even an extra year at guard (like Oher had) is a huge boost.

His dad was a darn good H.S. player as well. I coached on the staff at CW when he was there (the dad).
