Its really great to see an objective fan from an SEC team. I guess you can't stop ESPN even when they are praising you. They made me sick with their praise leading up the the NC game but I couldn't stop it.

Bingo. The "SEC / Southern Speed" mantra has been around for as long as I can remember. It's just that January made it an irrefutable fact as far as the talking heads are concerned. Which makes it even more ridiculous because speed had little to nothing to do with that loss.
Of course meatchickens' meltdown to start the year only amplified it even moreso -- but they really do have some speed issues.

Yet another example of SEC speed. Their fans type so fast that they have to spell 'Go' with five letters instead of two. Just so it'll take them the same amount of time to type as everyone else.

You and I agree that it was just one game. But I think that they would want to count LSU over Notre Dame as another game of relevance. Capitol One Bowl? Outback Bowl? Did those games take place?

As an LSU fan, and a fan of the SEC, it's funny to see bitching about the national media from outside eyes. For years we've bitched about USC being shoved down our throat 24/7 by ESPN, and if not USC, the resurgence of the Mighty Irish under the direction of the best college football coach to ever step on the sidelines. With options 1 & 2 gone, I guess the SEC HAS stepped in and filled the role of media darlings this year. I haven't really noticed it until reading this thread, but they do seem to be hyping the SEC more than usual. Probably started around the end of the MNC game last year.

As far as the Big Ten vs SEC, or SEC vs Any BCS Conference debate goes....

My take is that the top teams from any of the major conferences would have a hard time beating each other. Everyone at that level has speed, you have to have it in order to be able to compete at that level. It's just been portrayed as SEC speed b/c of the meltdown OSU had in the MNC last year. A bad game that was magnified b/c of the national stage it was on. Play that game 10 times and I don't think Florida wins by that kind of a point margin (or even remotely close) again. Of course this is just my opinion. What do I know? I'm an SEC fan. =)

The difference between you and the SEC fans we have issues with, is that you don't have blinders on. You can actually see weaknesses and strengths in all the teams regardless of conference.

The "Southern Speed" thing comes from perceived style of football, that's all. Run more "fast plays" like slants and screens, and when running the ball, draws, stretches, reverses and sweeps, and the highlight reel media calls you a "fast" team.

Call a bunch of fullback ISOs where your tailback is drilling the Sam into next week, and they call you a "power" team, even if that back runs a 4.4.

Really, the average sports hack journalist or tv talking head isn't capable of analyzing the sport much deeper than that. When you complain about the media, you're complaining about the writings and opinions of some of the lowest ability college graduates of any major. Take it easy on the poor fellas.

Great post, and I agree 100%. The SEC DOES "play" a faster style of football. It's not necessarily that they ARE faster, it just LOOKS faster.

Also, I have a question for you guys....

I've seen the 40yd speed charts comparing Ohio State to Florida/LSU. And while Ohio State compares very evenly, if not better in most positions, how would you say that the rest of Big Ten compares to the rest of the SEC??

I'm not asking for you to break it down team by team w/ timed 40 charts, but just your opinions. Take Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, and South Carolina and compare them to the 3rd-8th best teams in the Big Ten and give me an unbiased opinion on the speed issue.(or as unbiased as you can )

I personally haven't watched enough Big Ten Football to give an honest opinion. But it would be hard for me to imagine that after OSU, UM, and PSU that the Big Ten would compare evenly. I'm just saying that while your argument may be a good one for OSU, it may not be a good one for the conference as a whole.

Do you have a couple of cheat sheets from the SEC that would fill your mid to bottom of conference (or 3rd through 8th or whatever)?

Best to do this in an open and collaborative manner wouldn't you say?

I'd say right now as we speak in 2007 the mid to lower level B10 teams are not overall as athletic as the mid to lower level SEC teams. Thats not saying the teams are neccessarily that much better but if you lined them al up for a combine type of thing I think the SEC would have the edge.

I have no problem giving the SEC the nod for depth the past couple of years as long as I'm conversing with someone who understands its a cyclical thing and the B10 is just as good year in and year out.

PSU compares to strong SEC defense. They tend to have bruisers at RB. Their WRs have plenty of game speed. In the 90's their talent level was higher across the board, imo.

MSU plays a fast variety of football, with speed at QB, RB & WR. That speed tends to be reckless and paired with minimal talent on D.
Illinois has fast players on both sides of the ball, (moreso than the last few years) but we all know that's the SEC influence of Zooker.

UM recruits superior athletes but their S&C is greatly maligned by their own fans, as is their offseason dedication. Too many players grow complacent there, as offseason workouts are truly treated as optional, unlike most premiere schools where players police themselves and lazy attitudes lead to the bench. I sincerely believe this is why a number of UM players seem to play above their draft stock in the league, especially at LB.

Iowa & Wisky do not land many blue chippers, but are typically coached up into disciplined, smart teams. (note this hasn't been the case the last couple years for Iowa)

Minnesota & NW are not particularly talented across the board, but both have had strong RB play recently.

Indiana's offense, THIS year, has a lot of speed with Lewis, Hardy, Thigpen and others. Their D is still suspect, however.
