2007 tOSU Freshman Class

Just out of curiousity, and I realize its still very early, but who has burned there redshirt already this year and who still has it intact? I know I have seen:

Saine
Rolle
Clifford
Sanzenbacher
Washington
Heyward
Torrence

Has anyone else gotten in already this year, and are there any surefire redshirts?

Scott has also burned his redshirt. It appears the rest are good bets to redshirt though I'm curious to see what happens with Blankenship.

Heyward was possesed today. Everytime that kid was in the line-up he was reaking havoc. Brian Rolle was killing people on speical teams. I'm excited about the future of our defense. We are so deep it is almost embarrassing. Holding your opponent to around 70 yards in ridiculous...I don't care who they are.

This topic seems to be underlined every week we play. The 2007 Freshman class is a unit. They support one another when they play and add to the overall cohesion of the team. The defense is mighty this year and has found several freshman contributing at a high level. We saw Rolle and Heywerd this past game on defense and special teams. Clifford in both games so far is doing well.

Then there Saine, Washington, Torrence, and Sanzenbacher on offense in the last two games. IMO, this has been a very good turn of events. Saine was awesome in the last game and I can see a KO return for a TD in the not to distant future. Backing up Beanie gives him a rest as well. Washington, Torrence and Sanzenbacher all take the heat of Hartline and Robo. They are getting reps and learning the offense and making a few mistakes, but they are a threat and have proven their worth so far. This is were they will have the greatest impact. They are enough of a threat therebt giving the two Brians the opportunity to get open more often. Then when Robbie finds them open a few times, strike with the freshman. This 4 WR set with the added threat of Brandon Saine to catch the football will be what wins tOSU football games. OK, this sounds biased but the game can really open up with the Frosh sprinting up and down the field. I'm very optimistic for the Bucks in the next game and I see them improving from week to week. I see these freshmen making a few surprising catches and visits to the endzone.

With incredible performances from the freshman class, it will make it difficult for opponents to double team Robiskie or have the defense key in on RB Chris Wells in the Backfield. Along with action from starting QB Todd Boeckman, WR Brian Robiskie (9 catches for 153 yards), LB James Laurinaitis ('06 Top defensive player in the country), and kicking by Ryan Pretorius (3-3 in field goals), the Buckeyes are quickly finding a team chemistry that could result in an unstoppable offense, powerful defense, and strong special teams. Go young bucks!

I, for one, didn't expect all these kids to be involved so much so early.
I always knew this was a better class than let on by rivals/scout (they seem to prefer size of class over quality, throw 4 and 5 stars around to every kid out of the south, and largely base the stars off what programs are recruiting a kid... ensuring those same programs always have "great" classes... as a self-perpetuating cycle)
Suffice to say, recruiting ratings are pretty much junk imo. But I never expected all the kids to get this big of an impact so soon. Kudos to them, and I think we've got a lot to look forward to. =D

Young Wideouts Still Impress: Ray Small is back this week and veteran wide receivers Devon Lyons and Albert Dukes are both available after missing practice time early this season with injuries, Lyons with an ankle injury and Dukes with a sore finger.
"Early they both missed considerable time. They're both pretty close to 100 per cent now," said wide receiver coach Darrell Hazell.
Hazell said that the Buckeyes will probably take nine wide receivers to Washington. That group will include Brian Hartline, Brian Robiskie, Small, Dukes, Lyons, Dane Sanzenbacher, Devon Torrence, Taurian Washington and at least one other receiver. The playing rotation will be much shorter and will include at least two freshmen, Washington and Sanzenbacher, to go along with Robiskie, Hartline and Small. According to Hazell, both Sanzenbacher and Washington have made the most of their opportunities to play while Lyons and Dukes were injured and will be tough to get out of the rotation.
"Saturday we'll probably play five guys based on how the game goes," said Hazell.
Hazell said he is impressed with how the freshmen have picked up the nuances of college football.
"They're probably a little further advanced at this time than what I expected." said Hazell
"I thought that maybe by week five or six they would be at this point. I think they've done a tremendous job of studying off the field and that's given them a chance to be good."
Sanzenbacher has already developed a reputation as a fast learner and heady player. According to Hazell, Washington brings his own set of assets to the table.
"He's strong," said Hazell.
" He's a very strong guy. Powerful but he has very soft hands. He's a little raw with his body right now in terms of getting in and out of breaks but he's going to be a special guy when it's all said and done."

"When Akron and Youngstown St put eight in the box, we run up the middle anyway, because we go 6'8" 310 across the front, plus give Dionte and Beanie running starts at anything left standing in the way. We do this to the scrubs on our schedule, because our guys are big enough to push people around. To most untrained eyes, you might call this our "3 yards and a hail of boos" offense. But man, those fans sure do cheer once a team like Akron is totally and completely spent after 40 minutes of it, and Beanie starts ripping off back-to-back 30 yarders.

But we don't expect this tactic to work against Washington, because they're a big time program with meal vouchers and stuff that can afford to feed their linemen more than just PB&J, so if they show eight or nine in the box to stop our run, which we think they'll do, since that's the only thing we've put on film this year, we'll motion Saine out to the Shot-Ginn position and go five-wide with Robo, Hartline, Scoot, and Small. Let's see their LB's cover all those guys!"
