2007 tOSU Freshman Class

OSU freshmen produce in flash
By Jon Spencer

COLUMBUS -- Wide receiver Dane Sanzenbacher received plenty of advice from teammates before his Ohio State debut, none of which you'll find in coach Jim Tressel's winners manual.
"There was definitely encouragement," Sanzenbacher said, "but it was more like, 'Don't pee down your leg.' "

"They've got some great talent," the 23-year-old Boeckman said of the rookies. "If you get the ball in their hands, they're fast and can make plays. Get it to
them as fast as you can and they're going to make things happen."

This is the type of leadership you need from the upperclassmen that helps the younger guys step right in and immediately contribute. Just imagine where we might be if we didn't have guys like A.J. Hawk telling James Laurinaitis, "tackle the guy with the ball" or others to remind Sanzenbacher, "don't pee down your leg."
This type of 'take care of your own' camaraderie is how Tressel can maintain the program at such a high level, while the new guys that Charlie Weis and Lloyd Carr have are [censored]ing themselves while surrendering four-plus TDs to inferior competition in their home openers.

The thing about this class was we all knew this was a smaller class, but that this class had one thing in abundance SPEED. So far w haven't been disappointed at all with Saine, Washington, Scoot, Torrence,Clifford, Evenge, and Boom. Add those guys with one of the biggest impact player of this class in C. Heyward and you have a very small but talent rich class.

That's always good advice.

"I'm sure they were nervous; I'm sure they were excited," Tressel said. "In fact, Dane said to Brandon after the game, 'Have you ever heard 105,000 people go 'Uhhh' after you dropped a ball?' (Sanzenbacher muffed one pass.) It's loud. But they're competitive guys."
That's a great quote, as well. It shows that Dane gets it. He wants to do well, but isn't so paralyzed by fear that he can't perform.

Dane has a history of stepping it up in big games. By HS standards playing in a series of playoff games and winning the State Champonship (at 17) is like playing against YSU (at almost 19). Just a few more screaming fans and noise. You know what I mean - not to lessen the accomplishment but a greater "big game" atmosphere. He'll adjust and make those catches because IMO he would rather hear Yeaaaa!! amplified 105,000 times over Uhhh!!!
Go Bucks

I've had an instinct throughout August till now that this was a year that the class of frosh needs to step up. A lot of youth and inexperience blurs the lines between newcomers and RS Frosh and Sophs, probably. And, I suspect that will be even more true next year when a stellar class comes in. I will be surprised if some of the highly rated kids don't step in early next fall. But now is now, and I think it bodes well for the future for these frosh to get not only playing time, but a sense of self confidence in their ability to contribute.
Go Bucks!
