5 statements (agree/disagree) Offense Edition

There have been many questions about the offense after the first 3 games, and I am putting some thoughts out there that I have seen and heard alot of and seeing what you guys think.

1. Todd is turning himself into a very solid starting QB

- Agree - He has had his moments where he has struggled locking onto receivers, forcing balls, and underthrowing guys, but his progression from the first half to the second of the Washington game really showed me something. He really seems to have the team behind him, and with the running game he has behind him, it will allow the passing game to open up and with Small back on the field, I think he will only continue to improve his overall game.

2. Henton should be the backup

- Agree - I have seen this posted in many places, and I have also seen that Henton should take over as the starter. I think that is crazy, but what I have seen from Robbie and Henton, I do believe that Henton just seems more calm and collected out there...Robbie tries to take off too often, his ball always seems to dive into the ground, and he struggles to go thru his reads.

3. Saine should be the starter

- Disagree - I have seen this posted and stated in quite a few places and I really think this is crazy as well...Yes Saine is going to be a very good back here, and yes he is a homerun threat, but Beanie is the pounder, he wears guys down, he can take mroe of the beating, and that allows Saine and Mo Wells to come in and take advantage of the tired defenders...Also Beanie since the second half of Akron has been a different back after he shook the rust off from not practicing that much in the fall.

4. Our WR's can't stretch the field

- Disagree - I have also seen this stated elsewhere. I just think that we werent doing any of this in the first 2 games...Hartline and Robo both got deep against Washington, and while they may not have the speed of Teddy to get deep, they have the size that allows them to go up and get jump balls and shield off the defenders and that coupled with Todd's ability to throw the deep ball, when the safties start cheating up to take away the run, I think we are going to see more and more of this...Also I wouldnt be suprised if we didnt see Saine split out of the backfield and let him use his speed to get deep.

5. Our Oline is not very good

- Disagree - Once again I have seen this all over after the first two games, saying that they don't know how to block, they can't get any push, and yadda yadda, but I think those questions were answered after last weekend...There will still be times when our vanilla offense will come into play and it will look like we arent getting a push, and we are letting teams stack the box, and not take advantage of it, but that is just Tress setting up things for later games...I also would think the TE's need alot of credit here, and they have been hooking the end and getting down field to the LB's and S's very well to help spring some runs...Also we didnt get sacked once last week...

Thoughts...

I wouldn't disagree with anything you said here...

Boeckman is progressing, but still has some work to do to get better...

Henton should be the backup and NOT the starter - Todd's experience and maturity overrides anything Henton can bring to the table NOW (but that may change if Henton makes the leaps and bounds improvement from 07 to 08).

I agree on #3 as well..but God forbid, if Beanie gets hurt...does Saine or Mo Wells start?

The one thing I will say is that while our offense was vanilla against YSU and Akron, our OL should have been more dominant in both games. They looked uninspired in those contests, especially the Akron game.

well, i don't think you are going to see much disagreement with those sentiments on this board... the scout board is another story. those people are insane, and i don't mean that in a good way. a large majority are seriously out of touch with reality.

Agree. He makes good decisions, checks off well, and throws good passes for most of the game. It's that part of the game that isn't "most" that holds him back from actually being a solid starting QB.

Quote:
2. Henton should be the backup
Agree. Rob is a good QB, but he's not cut out for this. He looks to take off as soon as he sees his receivers covered - sometimes he doesn't even make a full progression, it seems. Henton looks to pass first, but is still very mobile. I don't know if Troy Smith talked to him, but he's that style.

Quote:
3. Saine should be the starter
Disagree, and whoever says he should be is nuts. We have a deep stable of RBs. Beanie is the workhorse, though, and should get the most carries. He will wear down a defense, since it takes good tackling to take him down. And Beanie has good speed, making him a threat to turn any run into a 20+ run. Saine is great, he will be great, but he's not polished yet. Besides, don't you want to have an Arkansas-style dual RB threat? If you put Saine in the slotback and Beanie at tailback, you could have a pretty nasty run-swing pass option.

Quote:
4. Our WR's can't stretch the field
Agree, for now. Robiskie just isn't fast enough to do what a Ray Small can. Once Small is back on the field, it changes. Robiskie is a danger to take one to the house, but unlike Ted Ginn last year, he doesn't do it on pure speed. He had to beat his corner in man coverage, playing up. Once Small is able to go deep at times, he can, and Robiskie will draw man coverage.

Quote:
5. Our Oline is not very good

Big disagree. There isn't an oline in the world that will be able to block 9 men and open a hole for Beanie, and that's why people think it sucks. But when it's a more reasonable 4 or 5 rushing, these guys haven't let very much through. Boeckman didn't get sacked at all against Washington, and very rarely the rest of the year so far. And they open holes big enough for Beanie to drive a truck through. They're also starting to look a lot better, and they're able to pick up the blitzes off the edges and the corners, and they're able to block 8 in the box.

Thoughts...
1. Todd is turning himself into a very solid starting QB.
I agree. You can see him improve from game to game. And you can see
his confidence grow right along with it. He stays in the pocket and
takes hits and his teammates see that too. He manages the game
pretty well. He does make some errors mentally but that is to be
expected with a new guy. All In all I think he will work out just fine.

2. Henton should be the backup.
I agree for the same reasons you do. But I also think he is just pressing
a little too much, maybe from know Henton is right on his heels or is past
him. A rock and a Hard place?

3. Saine should be the starter.
No. If he continues to develop Beanie may have a shot at the Heisman
next year. We haven't started to see just how good Beanie will be. Saine
will have to wait.

4. Our WR's can't stretch the field.
This year our field stretching abilities lie in the number we have rather
the speed of one guy. While we have not seen ours in action against a
top flight D. I think the best job so far was by Hartline this last weekend.
But if we can get some of the WR's back along with Small and the rest
we will have blazing speed overall.

5. Our Oline is not very good.
Agree that they are not great. there are still too many mistakes being
made. Especially against the teams we have played. I think they are just
starting to Gel and develop into a good Oline. The potential and talent is
there though to be a great line. I can see that thet are improving nicely
too.

Disagree. I trust JT and his staff, they have infinitly more detailed knowledge of the players than any of us do.

No way in hell. Anyone spouting that theory not related to young Mr Saine should be committed.

4. Our WR's can't stretch the field
Disagree. Route running, beating press coverage and a powerful play action game can all offset the lack of raw speed and thats not even taking into account Small working his way back in.

Our Oline is not very consistent...yet. They are all very talented and there has been solid improvement from week to week.

Agree for the most part. He still tends to baby the ball to his receivers, but if you notice, his best throws are the ones he plants and fires on. I'm absolutely sure the coaches are working with him on that aspect.

Quote:
2. Henton should be the backup
I think so. His one drive went right down the field. I do think he'll be the QB to replace Boeckman after next year and not Schoenhoft, but we will see.

Quote:
3. Saine should be the starter
Nope. People, I think, are thinking of Saine in terms of Mo Clarett, but while Saine is faster, Clarett was a bit bigger at this point. Beanie has a year under his belt and is running the ball very well right now. Let's not mess with a good thing.

4. Our WR's can't stretch the field
Small has been coming back from an injury and the offense has had the shackles on it for the most part. hartline and Robo both ran deep patterns (with Robo catching a TD) and when Small gets back into battery he will be our featured deep threat.

well it wasn't at first....it was definitely good on Saturday

I agree with all but I'll let the coaches decide PT for the QB's, they know much more about the situation than any of us. Overall I'm very pleased with the progression so far, I expect it to continue...

I only agree with #1, about Boeckman being solid.

I disagree with #2 (Henton being #2 QB) - like Jax, I'm willing to trust the coaches on that one.

Thoughts...
1. he's very accurate as a passer. He is solid as a starter.
2. no way
3. saine and wells should both start and let wells run outside more often.
4. disagree tressel showed what they could do against washington
5. unknown ,they showed up last game but, 1 out of 3

I gotta chime in on Schoenhoft. There is no doubt that from what we have seen Henton looks better - not because he has done anything great but because Rob has been pretty bad. I have said that as much as anyone.

But the key phrase here is "what we have seen".

These guys have hundreds of reps in practice and we have seen only a handful in game action. We all have an opinion but very little basis for it. Certainly not enough to generate the very strong opinion that the sum of our posts in this and other threads creates.

As long as Boeckman stays healthy it is a non-issue. I would prefer to wait for it to sort itself out.

Don't really know the answer yet because its to early on questions 1-5. I need a few more games to see if theirs any developement.

Todd has his moments he looks great and times he looks lost.

Brandon Saine needs more touches!!

Antonio Henton must not practice very well because he looked awesome in the series he had against YSU.

There it is. I posted earlier that Robby got 3 plays in Wash over 2 series and then Henton came and I don't remember if he even threw a pass or not. So I agree with Oh8ch. Let the coaches sort it out.
Several people in here have intimated that Henton is very close to Todd in the QB race. Since I don't know I bow to their superior knowledge and sources. BUT as long as Todd continues to improve from week to week I see no need to change. As far as who is #2 I don't really care since I trust the staff to entertain me.
