Added Michigan State game.
OSU: 7 penalties for 35 yards, 7 offense, ZERO defense. Penalty YPG dropped from 42.1YPG to 41.3YPG.
MSU: 2 penalties for 25 yards. Opponents' PYPG dropped from 43.3YPG to 41.0YPG.
If anyone knows who the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was against at the beginning of the game post it here and I'll update the first post (I missed the opening drive).
This defense is scary good... they shut down the MSU running game without any penalties all game... just awesome.

Added Penn State game.
OSU: 4 penalties for 36 yards, 4 offense, ZERO defense. Penalty YPG dropped from 41.3YPG to 40.6YPG.
PSU: 2 penalties for 9 yards. Opponents' PYPG dropped from 41.0YPG to 37.4YPG.
Greenies if someone finds out who committed the personal foul after the punt return in the second quarter before I do.
EDIT: Just found it... Larry Grant.

I just saw a post over at Buckeye Commentary that had a quick mention about penalties...
Quote:
Flag Conspiracy: Obviously said in jest but what the hell is going with the officiating of Ohio State football games? I know, I know, my good blog buddy John Gasaway, formerly of the Big Ten Wonk and now with Basketball Prospectus, taught me long ago that complaining about the refs is a tired pastime left best alone.
But, I can't help it.
The opponents of Ohio State are the least penalized of any Big Ten team...for the third straight year. Conversely, we've had the most flags against us (flags, not penalty yards). Nothin' to see here. Carry on.
|
Here are the Big Ten penalty stats for this year:
PENALTIES.............. G No Yds Avg/G
--------------------------------------
1. Penn State.......... 9 35 282 31.3
2. Minnesota........... 9 46 352 39.1
3. Ohio State.......... 9 53 366 40.7
4. Michigan............ 9 46 380 42.2
5. Purdue.............. 9 50 385 42.8
6. Wisconsin........... 9 53 403 44.8
7. Northwestern........ 9 43 411 45.7
8. Iowa................ 9 52 435 48.3
9. Michigan State...... 9 47 449 49.9
10.Indiana............. 9 46 461 51.2
11.Illinois............ 9 47 464 51.6
OPPONENT PENALTIES..... G No Yds Avg/G
--------------------------------------
1. Indiana............. 9 60 554 61.6
2. Northwestern........ 9 59 467 51.9
3. Purdue.............. 9 53 449 49.9
4. Michigan............ 9 47 398 44.2
5. Penn State.......... 9 47 384 42.7
6. Minnesota........... 9 46 374 41.6
7. Iowa................ 9 44 366 40.7
8. Illinois............ 9 49 361 40.1
8. Wisconsin........... 9 43 361 40.1
10.Michigan State...... 9 50 358 39.8
11.Ohio State.......... 9 38 337 37.4
I'll take this one step further... what is the differential for each team, both penalties and yards (- means the team listed has an advantage in the stat)?
PENALTY DIFFERENTIAL... G Dif Yds. Avg/G
----------------------------------------
1. Penn State.......... 9 -12 -102 -11.3
2. Indiana............. 9 -14 -093 -10.3
3. Purdue.............. 9 -03 -064 -07.1
4. Northwestern........ 9 -16 -056 -06.2
5. Minnesota........... 9 000 -022 -02.4
6. Michigan............ 9 -01 -018 -02.0
7. Ohio State.......... 9 +15 +029 +03.2
8. Wisconsin........... 9 +10 +042 +04.7
9. Iowa................ 9 +08 +069 +07.7
10.Michigan State...... 9 -03 +091 +10.1
11.Illinois............ 9 -02 +103 +11.4
A couple of things to take away from this: - While Ohio State has the largest penalty differential against (+15) the penalty yards per game differential is pretty close to zero... boils down to Ohio State false starting once more per game (which is the penalty they've had the most problems with). This also means Ohio State is not committing that many "stupid" penalties (personal fouls, pass interference, etc).
- While Illinois commits almost the same amount of penalties as their opponents do (2 less to be exact) their penalties are of a harsher kind (+11.4 YPG over their opponents)... Zook bringing the SEC mentality to the Big Ten?
- Surprising to see Northwestern with the largest penalty differential against (-16) and Michigan pretty much even (-1)... it seems that Michigan usually has less penalties than their opponents.
- Not surprising to see Penn State at the top of these statistics... a little home-cooking in Happy Valley or disciplined play by the Lions?
One other thing of note: Over half of Ohio State's 53 penalties involve the "mental" penalties on offense... false starts (15) and holding (13).

That was a BS call. The ball was on the ground and no one had recovered it. He blocked a guy that was running down the field to cover the kick. If the ball is live and no wistle had blown, how can you get a personal foul by knocking someone down who is covering the kick?
