Who's the Greatest Buckeye Linebacker? (Vote for FIVE)
Three years ago, we did a series of polls in which the BP community selected the "Greatest Buckeye Ever" team. Since then, many more great players have passed through the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, so it's probably a good time to revisit the polls.
Every week, we will post a poll on "Who's the Greatest Buckeye" at each of the positions. The first poll, quarterback, will open today, and run for a month. All players selected for the poll will be from the "modern era", which we have more-or-less arbitrarily determined to have begun with the hiring of Woody Hayes in 1951. However, there will be a special poll for the older Buckeye stars, where you will be allowed to choose amongst such greats as Les Horvath, Vic Janowicz, Chic Harley, etc. Please vote on each poll, if you can. Also, please note that each poll will allow you to vote at least twice, as we would like to compile a first and second team. If you vote for "other", please let us know your selection(s) by setting forth the name(s) in a post. Polls will be posted as follows: 1. Quarterback 2. Multi-purpose player 3. Tailback 4. Fullback 5. Wide Receiver 6. Tight End 7. Offensive Tackle 8. Offensive Guard 9. Offensive Center 10. Defensive Tackle 11. Defensive End 12. Linebacker 13. Safety 14. Cornerback 15. Kicker 16. Punter 17. "Old Timer" 18. Head Coach So, please vote now for your All-Time Greatest Buckeye Linebacker; please make FIVE selections. Thans for your participation. Link to the 2004 poll |

C'mon you young guys, show Marek some love. Afterall, he was Spielmans idol while in high school.
Oh, and he just so happens to be the Buckeyes all time career tackle leader, was 3-1 against scUM, and had an interception in every game he played against them. Cousineau Gradishar Hawk Marek Spielman Last edited by Brutus1; 10-12-2007 at 09:53 AM. |

I had the same except subbed in Katzenmoyer for Marek. I am only 31 so i don't remember Marek. I don't think you could go wrong with any 5 guys on that list. |

Spielman, Hawk, Gradishar, Cousineau, Marek.
But I think I'm going to have to bump one of those guys by the time Laurinaitis is finshed in Columbus. |

Gradishar, Cousineau, Speilman, and Marek are easy. the fifth is VERY difficult. how can you leave off Steve Tovar? he only lead the Buckeyes in tackles for three years straight... which is exactly what AJ Hawk did... Katzenmoyer is out. he wasn't even the best 'backer on his team. Pepper was a stud...
i think i'll have to go with Steve Tovar as my fifth. he had more tackles than AJ Hawk, and didn't have the help that AJ Hawk did. |

For what they did while they were Buckeyes, my votes went to Gradishar, Spielman, Cousineau, Marek, and AJ. I know many of you would disagree but I would go with Gradishar as my #1. Yes, even over Spielman.

I think he did make it in the NFL because of his size. He was a very very good college LB but I think his size would have limited him in the pros.

Dear God! This one is the hardest "Greatest ever" poll we've got by far.

As for LB's not having much help, it is guys who are much better than their teammates who get the most tackles. If you play with a bunch of other great players, they'll be getting to the ball carrier and NOT missing tackles with more regularity than, say Marek's teammates. You might not have as many tackles, but that doesn't mean you're not the best. As for leaving off Gradishar... That's just plain shameful. |

Gradishar
Speilman Hawk Cousinar Katzenmoyer Special thoughts about Wilhelm... never saw a kid play with more heart... unless maybe it was Ike Kelly on the 59 - 61 teams. I'd throw the line up out against any school, especially Penn State. |
