i see us very much capable of winning this game. i think the 1st quarter will have its share of defense, but i expect after that for the scoring to speed up. we MUST get the running game going, we cannot rely on boeckman to win this game, it seems to me that everytime he gets pressured in the pocket, he throws the football up for grabs. we cant have costly turnovers against lsu. our line is great, but even the great 5 cant protect against 7...8 yellow jerseyed opponents. lsu is going to blitz, blitz, blitz boeckman and the running game, so the 2 brians are gonna have to get open on short routes. if we can establish even a mediocre running game and a short passing game, i think we can keep that defense on the edge, then we have the advantage. tressel will have these boys ready to go!!

there was one really good article i read talking about a study a professor did on going for it on fourth downs vs punting, especially in late game situations. He said that teams were overwelmingly better off going for it. If i find it i will post it but i haven't as of yet. There is so much to factor in a call, like emotion and all, but i don't see anything wrong with it. You may not like it and thats cool. I can't remember lsu's exact fourth down conversion rate, but it is like 10 for 14 or something like that. Any lsu fan remember? I am curious now.

Here is the earlier TMQ article -
and the academic study you and he spoke to. (The latter is a pdf file).

This paper examines a single, narrow decision?the choice on fourth down in the
National Football League between kicking and trying for a first down?as a case
study of the standard view that competition in the goods, capital, and labor markets
leads firms to make maximizing choices. Play-by-play data and dynamic
programming are used to estimate the average payoffs to kicking and trying for a
first down under different circumstances. Examination of teams? actual decisions
shows systematic, clear-cut, and overwhelmingly statistically significant departures
from the decisions that would maximize teams? chances of winning. Possible
reasons for the departures are considered.

Translated - going for it on 4th can help your chances of winning.

SEC fans, read, memorize, internalize. I for one have heard enough of your crap over the last year to last a lifetime. I won't hesitate to boot your butt off either. Talk civil or be gone. EOM

A lot of Buckeye fans here respect LSU, and look forward to a terrific title game. Win or lose, we hope BP.com will have a few quality Tigers who stick around and contribute to our forums, the way USC, Florida, Texas, and other fans have done after our past meetings. LSU, like us, is a program that resides near the top of the polls every year, and we value having the perspective of some of their fans around.
If you're here to discuss, that's great. No one will ask you to tone down your pride in what LSU accomplished this year, and where they're going (assuming 8pm brings what it should). No one will ask you to pretend to believe you're going to lose. I know, you saw 41-14 and you think that single game is more representative than the 27 or so that bookended it, even though you also saw the "slow, thick-ankled" Buckeyes match "the fastest team ever" when we won our title in 2002. Despite the fact that no one team has stepped forward as a dominant force this year, including (twice over) your Tigers, you feel like this is a gimme win. Fair enough.
The funny thing is that I'm giving you this warning to protect other LSU fans, not this site. Many Ohio State fans felt like LSU got robbed when they kissed the crystal trophy, but the media talked up USC. Many Ohio State fans respect the current level of play coming out of the SEC. These things have an ebb and flow to them, and there is no question 'your' conference is playing great ball. But if trolls, and weak trolls at that, come on here and set a poor tone, it's going to be harder to weed through your fan base and find the people who actually know something about the sport.
So stay and talk, have fun, but don't degrade the conversation, or our image of LSU fans. If you just want to talk smack and get some good smack back, I suggest you find another site.

Welcome Tiger fans
Looks like we have a good bunch of classy well informed Tigah fans (and at least one classless a$#hole) This should help the long wait go a little faster.

Nice forum, I love vBulletin. Nothing carries over year to year in college football, unless you're a Bama fan.
