It was obvious that JT was very impressed with this kid in the Jersey scrimmage. Said he played both TB and FB and looked very good. Coach said, "Boy, can he run".
He also mentioned having a kid that big run into people late in the game.
Could be another two star recruit that JT turns into a stud.
At 5'11" and 215 with a 4.60 40 time this kid may be more than what most of us expected.

More notes from Saturday's jersey scrimmage:

* FULLBACK QUESTIONS: Most of the time, it won't matter. Of the 165 snaps in Saturday's jersey scrimmage, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel estimated that a fullback was on the field only 20 percent of the time.

So the battle for the fullback job won't define the season - unless a fullback misses a block on fourth down and Beanie Wells gets stuffed in the backfield on a make-or-break run.

At the moment, one Glenville guy seems to be out, a Euclid guy seems to be in and another Glenville guy is in the mix.

Senior Curtis Terry (Glenville), who sounded like the leader for playing time there when camp started two weeks ago, didn't play fullback at all Saturday, spending his time at linebacker and defensive end.

"It's never over till it's over," Tressel said of the Terry fullback experiment. "He focused more on defense this week. The nice thing about Curtis is he's got the ability to help in a lot of different ways."

Instead, senior Brandon Smith (Euclid), Ryan Lukens, Spencer Smith and freshman Jermil Martin (Glenville) were among the players who saw fullback action.

With Wells and Brandon Saine sitting out at the tailback spot, Martin even saw some tailback time.

"He's kind of our double role guy," Tressel said. "He can run it, especially late in the game or late in the scrimmage when you're a little bit loaded up fatigue wise and that big guy hits you."

To be honest, I had totally forgot about Martin. Nice to see he is looking good and I agree, sounds as if JT was impressed. He was a physical runner at Glenville.

it sounds like Glenville freshman Jermil Martin may have made the travel roster for the game as a fullback, a nice perk for him. It would make sense. With the injury to tight end Rory Nicol, Brandon Smith, the starting fullback and senior from Euclid, will be needed as the second tight end in two tight-end sets along with Jake Ballard. And that means the Buckeyes could use another body at fullback, where Curtis Terry and Ryan Lukens are also options.

I think Martin could play into the running back plans heavily, next year.
A dependable power back will be needed. He should be about 230 by then.

I agree, if he can gain the needed muscle, he can be very effective. Also, don't forget we are getting Carlos Hyde from Naples, Florida. He is a 225 pound back and can run a 4.65. Both of them can be pretty effective for us next year. Not to mention, the addition of Jaamal Berry as well. We are going to have some depth at running back next year.

He's probably over 230lbs already. He should play around 240-250 when he reaches his full potential.

Not if Beanies coming' back! Quite honestly, I'd love to see Beanie but it's in his best interest to go pro. Jermil could quite easily spell Boom/Berry, mainly in the red zone and in 3rd/4th and shorts.

Jermil is having surgery on his mouth. He said he has tissue that swells up around his vocal cords and its affecting his breathing so they are cutting out the tissue, cutting out his tonsils and he's getting sinus surgery (whatever that is).
Said he is going to miss six weeks.

There is a thought that this kid will surprise many in 2009. Wonder how big a setback this is? Hope all goes well and he gets healed up.

He will miss a lot of spring practice but if things go well, he might be able to play in the spring game, but that's just pure speculation.
He still had to go through Hell week last week but I'm not sure what he will be able to do with the mouth healing. Could still be able to run and lift but I don't know.

Thinks for the info!! I would think running would be hard for him. Take your time and get back to 100% spring ball would be great, but Big10 ball is the answer!!!

Martin moves to tailback (Blogging the Buckeyes)

Offensive coordinator Jim Bollman said today that redshirt freshman Jermil Martin will work at tailback when practices start this fall.
Martin has so far been a fullback. He is listed at 6-0, 227 in the spring media guide. The fact that incoming freshman Carlos Hyde did not qualify academically may have been a factor in Martin's move, as Hyde also is a big tailback.

Also states that Zach Boren will be working at FB.
