Early in my professional career, I spent 6 months or so working in Baton Rouge and New Orleans. I loved both cities...although I preferred Baton Rouge b/c it was cleaner and more of a college town.

LSU fans should be able to vouch for some of these other recommendations which I didnt see mentioned in the thread:
  • Mike Anderson's - a restaurant named for the former LSU linebacker...excellent cajun seafood - loved the fried alligator and the crawfish etoufee.
  • Tee Jay Ribs - a great rib joint in Baton Rouge...loved the St Louis style ribs, the red beans & rice and the fries.
  • ALSO - I saw Pat Obriens mentioned...if you like beer, try ABITA (amber, turtle dog, and purple haze are my favorites) - it is OUTSTANDING and i believe native to LA.
  • Finally, I loved the Red Fish Grill in New Orleans - I have recurring dreams about the blackened catfish.
  • I can vouch for the Shrimp Po Boys at Mother's...outstanding!
Hope it helps for those going down. Have a blast and....

DRAGO's for Chargrilled Oysters!! Unbelievable!!

DRAGO'S (original location is in Metarie and a second new location is downtown) for the BEST Chargrilled oysters ever. You will not find this anywhere on earth except at Drago's. It is the only thing I really miss and crave.

Tips: Be safe, travel in groups, stay defensive, walk away, stay in the busy parts of town (eg. French Quarter), don't be "taken", and be a good, polite visitor and guest. New Orleanians (urban, liberal) in general are not like Baton Rouge folks (conservative) so try not to generalize your impressions from your personal experiences. You won't be able to tell off-hand who is from where when the entire state of LA will be wearing purple and gold. Most folks from N'awlins are great and just want to have a good time. However, there are some people (like anyplace) who are not good and might be on the look-out to exploit the situation. It can be dangerous if you aren't aware. Unfortunately, there is alot of racial tension in NO and one needs to be sensitive to the issue. You would be surprised at the how almost any interaction - no matter what and however benign - can be and will be misinterpreted as racial in nature - it's unfortunate, but it does exist - in abundance. The best thing to do is to be courteous, be respectful in conversation, and give the benefit of the doubt in various situations. You cannot judge a person til you have walked in his shoes...

GEAUX BUCKEYES!!!!

The piano players at Pat O'Brien's know quite a few Ohio State songs. When my brother was down there, he saw a guy drink into hurricanes and after the second one his face went flat to the table.

I have never had a better brunch than the one I had at Brennan's (home of the original banana foster).

All great suggestions--Abita is my favorite beer! However, it's "TurboDog", a bit more intimidating name than TurtleDog . It's a dark ale and quite good.

My favorite Abita's are "Restoration Ale"--a pale ale where $1 per six pack is donated to Katrina relief, and their seasonal "Cristmas Ale", which still shouldl be offered at the time of the game.

Drink up and enjoy!
