Big Ten adds bye week, pushing back big game

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
It's not what Ohio State's president, athletic director or football coach would prefer, but the Buckeyes likely will play Michigan on Thanksgiving weekend each season as soon as 2009. With most of their coaches clamoring for a bye week, the Big Ten presidents on Dec. 2 approved extending the football season by one week.
Teams used to have a week off, but when the NCAA added a 12th game before the 2006 season, the Big Ten lost its bye week because it traditionally has completed play before Thanksgiving, the only major conference to do so.
That meant 12 straight weeks of games, and coaches hated that.

I love this decision. I think that would have had to do this or have some sort of championship game. I think the latter choice would ruin The Game to a certain point. Making a 13 week schedule and having The Game a week later is a good thing. This would mean a shorter lay-off until the bowl games. I think this would benefit the entire Big Ten conferance. Every team would be better prepared when the bowls came around because they all would have a shorter lay-off. I think this is a good thing.

This will create a little more wiggle room in terms of scheduling so hopefully the entire conference can manage to find some better quality of opponents in the coming years.

I don't think this decision will affect the team at all. But I don't mind it.
I'm one of the biggest traditionalists, but I was thinking that it would be pretty cool to schedule games against the SEC where the Big Ten team would go play the SEC team early in the year. Play down there on the hottest, most humid time of year. Then, next year, the SEC teams go to the north, and play Big Ten teams at the end of the season - the week before the SEC plays their conference championship game.
Do this method for 2 years, then take 2 years off, or so, before playing another 2 years.

you know you are not getting an SEC to travel north that late in the year. Hell you can hardly get them to travel north anytime of the year.

While I don't mind them extending the week, and the by week will certainly help the team, it will likely increase the travel budget for those of us flying in from out of town for the Michigan game on Thanksgiving weekend.

That's pretty much rivalry week down here.

Of course not, all the good teams are in the South, no need to travel. (Sorry, couldn't resist)

Let's add two bye weeks and push it back even further. Otherwise we just lost Michigan week.
Does anyone really think we - as fans - can keep the same level of focus when Grandma and Aunt Millie are coming into town two days before the game? When we have a house full of guests for the weekend half of whom don't care about football or are fans of other teams?
How many students will be going home rather than attending the game?
Senior tackle the day after the Holiday?
You can tell yourselves it will be the same, but you are wrong. your wife may tolerate you being on another planet that entire week now - but not when her parents are coming for dinner.
Think of all the pre-game parties and other festivities that traditionally happen the week leading up to the game. Particularly on Friday night. Those don't happen the day after Thanksgiving when the wives are out shopping.
First week in December means much higher chances of bad weather - but screw it.
Let's build a damn dome, start a 32 game playoff. stick a flag in the ball carrier's pocket and be done with it.
It's my own damn fault. I have just lived too long.
