But back to Michigan, you have to admit that this is beautiful:

I don't think there's anything beautiful about it. It's big, and round. Meh. Different story once the renovations are complete.
Photos of Michigan Stadium are taken inside, or of the gate. How many people take photos of the outside of the stadium? It's quite bland. It took me awhile just to find this pic on flickr:
When I think of
great stadiums, I think of atmosphere, architecture and unique traditions. UM has team tradition, but the stadium is pretty mundane in those categories... besides pioneering 'big' long before it's time. Note: Their uniforms sicken me a bit, but I can acknowledge how tremendous they are in terms of design & unique tradition.
If round bowls are your cup of tea, I think USC has a lot more character:
How does Michigan Stadium compare to this type of architecture?

Or this?
Or this? (Kyle Field is nothing if not intimidating, if only from a disturbing standpoint). The stadium and fans are wildly odd, but truly unique.
Even this has some serious character...
I guess to me the fans play too big of a role in the stadium. There are a million gorgeous pro stadiums out there, with varying levels of tradition, but they are just large collections of metal without tremendous fans.
Another example... the Orange Bowl is chock-full of history. But the fans are so lousy that I have never had any desire to attend a game there.
