The Trojans' defense has been virtually impenetrable in recent years when it consistently created pressure with a four-man rush.

Funny, I remember some kid from Texas having no issue with their defense.

[censored] that, I remember some 3rd string nobody QB from Stanford having no issue with it.
The amount of media love they get defies [censored]ing description.

When so many games come down to the final possessions of the fourth quarter, nothing beats pressure from the edge to quash a late drive.

I'll do you one up Ted Miller; 4th Quarter, 4th and 5 and the national championship on the line. I count 4 lineman and 2 linebackers making a total of 6 USC defenders.
( I bet Methomps will love this)

That's not quite fair. We lost 11 starters on that '05 defense to injury. As evidenced in your You Tube clip, Vince Young just read the coverage and dashed. Most of those guys playing were not slated as 1st string when the season began. Alot of freshmen and sophmores out there.
2004, 2006, 2007 all were stout defenses. These guys are going to be great this year. Our best secondary probably this decade, best linebacking corps this decade too.
2007 Rush Defense #4
Pass Defensse #6
Total Defense #2
2006 Rush Defense#9
Passing Defense #22
Total Defense #20
2005 Rush Defense #31
Passing Defense #42
Total Defense #48
2004 Rush Defense #1
Pass Defense #9
Total Defense #6
There is good reason to talk about USC's defensive performances these past few years. Same with Ohio State.
You guys have gotten alot of good publicity this decade, enough to make it to three championship games. Why you'd be a little bitter about some pub for SC's defense is a mystery. You had the number 1 defense last season, yet Flynn threw for 4 TD's in the championship game. To use a jump ball against Stanford in the final seconds as evidence that USC's defense isn't newsworthy is silly. tOSU somehow managed to lose to Illinois - a team USC beat to smithereens -- does that somehow diminish your #1 defense? Of course not.
In 2008, with LoJack and Ellis gone, that's going to be where any weakness lies.

Your missing my point; I have no problem saying USC has a solid defense.
However dear Ted is making it sound like you've had a brick wall since Carrol has been there.
I'm not judging USC based on one defensive play ( against Stanford)
however I can use that whole game against you;
And while we had the #1 defense statistically, we couldnt get it done against LSU. We couldnt stop the inside run game on 3rd down, missed tackles and sometimes didnt tackle at all. Illinois was a combination of biting on play action and missed tackles as well.
So that #1 ranking was essentially worthless...
I'm simply reflecting on ESPN's affair with USC, even from your standpoint you have to see what i'm saying.

Fair enough. I certainly have NOT appreciated ESPN's sense of proportion when it comes to USC (USC 2005: THE GREATEST TEAM OF ALL TIME!!!) In fact, I'm still angry about that fluffer job in '05. But it's a double-edged sword -- they practically set USC up to fail. So yes, I understand it.
Every team has off games where the right combination of factors renders a defense less than perfect. Illinois and LSU for you guys, Stanford and Oregon for USC. Perhaps the ranking seems useless, but I don't think it can be written off is all. It may seem worthless now | |
