Yeah but when they recruited him and talked about him it was as a safety not LB...

I didn't know if there was some decision that had been made that I had missed...

Ex-Beavercreek star big hit on OSU scout team

To the extent it's possible for a freshman football player to have a good season without actually appearing in a game, Zach Domicone has done just that.

The former Beavercreek High School quarterback, redshirted by Ohio State after signing as a safety, twice has been named defensive scout team player of the week for his work in helping to simulate opposing defenses in practice.

"They like how he flies around," Beavercreek coach Scott Clodfelter said. "They like big safeties, and he's bigger than all the safeties they have."

Domicone, listed at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, earned his recognition leading up to the Youngstown State and Wisconsin victories.

He figures to play on special teams next season and possibly crack the two-deep.

"Who knows? He could start," Clodfelter said. "They're losing some good defensive players."

At the Michigan game, Domicone told Clodfelter he had knee surgery for a torn meniscus the previous Tuesday.

"He's fine," the coach said. "It was a very small procedure. He wasn't even on crutches when I saw him."

* Safety Zach Domicone was reportedly very impressive on the scout team last season. He has NFL-safety size at 6-3, 215, and 4.47 speed to go with it. Domicone will play mostly on special teams in 2009, but will provide depth at safety as well. He was primarily an option quarterback in high school (three-year starter at the D-I level) that didn?t play much defensive back. Down the line, I think Domicone will play a lot of safety at OSU. But in 2009, he will have a ton of depth in front of him with Kurt Coleman, Jermale Hines, Anderson Russell, Aaron Gant and Nate Oliver.

Big first impression

Safety Zach Domicone redshirted last year, then suffered a groin injury and sat out the first four games this season. So he was thrilled to make his first real impact when he recovered a muffed second-half kickoff at the Minnesota 31-yard line.

After the ball bounced off Troy Stoudermire's hands, Domicone scooped it and burst into the end zone. But a muffed ball can only be downed, not advanced.

"Everybody thought I scored," Domicone said. "I heard a whistle when I first scooped it, but it didn't register in my mind that the play was dead."

No matter. The Buckeyes scored on the ensuing drive to go ahead 14-0 and turn the tide their way.
