What began as a weekend of hope turned into a week of celebration for Aurora, Ohio, two-way standout Adam Bellamy. The future defensive tackle in college ended the suspense Tuesday afternoon and issued a verbal commitment to the Ohio State Buckeyes.

My 6-year old on his way to bed asks, "Who is that, dad?" I told him that he is the latest young man who has decided to play football at Ohio State. His response, "Aaaawwwwsome!"

My response, "I agree, Nick."

Gawd, I just love this class that is coming together. Congrats to Adam and his family. We're most pleased with your decision to join the family.

Adam Bellamy = Motor + Motivation. Can't beat that combination! Keep hitting the books and the weights! Will be looking for you on Saturday afternoons!

Great thought! I only hope Corey Adams remembers when he was 6 how his dad probably said that very same thing him more or less and how he reacted then, being the true-blue Buckeye that he was born to be...and how he and Adam and Johnny together will sure enough put a halt to any delusional aspirations of the endzone....

The more I think about what Adam brings to the table the more excited I get. Welcome to the family, buddy...again!

Adam Bellamy was putting some young football players through their paces, urging them to give their all during a youth camp Monday in Aurora, Ohio, when his high school coached beckoned him. Bellamy, a senior-to-be defensive lineman for Aurora, had just given his all the day before at Ohio State's summer camp. Aurora coach Bob Mihalik said OSU coach Jim Tressel wanted Bellamy to call him.
When he did, Tressel offered him a scholarship. After taking 24 hours to think it over, Bellamy yesterday became the 17th commitment to OSU's 2009 recruiting class. In 48 hours, he'd gone from hoping to gain an offer from the Buckeyes to having one in his hip pocket. His performance in camp made the difference.
"I knew I definitely had to step it up to have a chance of possibly being a Buckeye," said Bellamy, 6 feet 4, 278 pounds. "I just approached that camp with my normal mentality: I busted my butt. Then I got lucky and it came true."

I think an academic scholarship is the way to fit more players into this class. Clarke and Bellemy have high GPA's. There are several others. The Bucks can have them enter on academic scholarship in the fall of 2009 and move them to athletic scholarship in the winter. Just a hunch.

Miami did this in the 1990's with great success. This is the only trick i see for the Bucks to get everyone into this class IMHO. 23-24 commits, 1-3 academic scholarships.

Any thoughts from the board as to if this makes sense?

On "give them academic schollies" - aside from the perception of gaming the system, it surely places an extraordinary burden on the players so treated. Most (all?) academic scholarships have requirements for maintaining a very high level of excellence in the classroom. Add that to the significant schedule demands as a full-time squad or roster player, a great deal to carry.

Last, if this was such a great idea for Miami in the '90's why do they no longer do such a thing today?

If an athlete is considered as "being recruited" (the multiple offers, visits, etc would put everyone OSU is after in that category) they count against the 85 as soon as they hit the field.

So you can't do an academic schollie. Nor can your rich parents or a group of boosters set up a special scholarship fund.

Good looking recruit on film, he chases down the ball carrier from all over the field, the film definitely shows a good motor. That and the coaches offer at camp after all the evaluation and the good student, citizen etc. makes me say welcome to the Buckeye family.

The rankings are usually biased towards pass rushers and Bellamy's role in college will be plugging the hole and freeing up our LB's to make plays.

Ya,I wish we would have gotten those 5 star LB's like Berkeley Hutchinson or Darel Slay over #32 ranked 3 star AJ Hawk. Screw the bias rankings.

And yet we still get excited when our commits achieve a 5 star ranking. It works both ways.
