CHICAGO ? Lest you forget, Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman had a good season last year. He led the conference in passing efficiency, completed 63.9 percent of his attempts, and recorded 25 touchdowns against 14 interceptions. Along the way, he led the Buckeyes to their third-straight conference crown and their second-straight national title game.

Terrelle Pryor, the No. 1 ranked player in the country as a high school senior, is beginning his freshman season at Ohio State University.

But Boeckman isn?t the only Ohio State quarterback receiving attention in Columbus these days. That?s what happens when a hotshot prep quarterback, the No. 1 ranked player in the country as a high school senior, enters school as a freshman.

Boeckman was the Ohio State player representing the offense here at the Big Ten Football Kickoff on Friday, but Terrelle Pryor?s specter sat right beside him.

?I?m excited to see what he can do,? Boeckman said. ?I know he?s a special athlete and I know he can do a lot of things. But we don?t know what he can do until he gets on the pads and suits up with us Aug. 4. I?m looking forward to seeing what he could do to help us.?

That is the question ? what exactly can Pryor do for the Buckeyes?

He picked the Buckeyes over Michigan, Penn State and Oregon ? but not until more than a month into the signing period and after he had called a news conference declaring that he had not yet decided which school he would attend. Pryor, who is 6-foot-6 and 235 pounds, was an all-around force as he led both the Jeanette High School football and basketball teams to state championships in Pennsylvania.

It?s unclear what his role will be at Ohio State this season ? particularly with one of the top quarterbacks in the conference returning for his senior year ? but, like Boeckman, Coach Jim Tressel is eager for the first day of practice to arrive.

?He?s going to be incorporated into our offense that day,? Tressel said. ?He?s got a lot of things that he has to build on as a foundation ? the communication system, the way we do things, the way our things work together. He?s the kind of guy, as I?ve gotten to know him more and more, that knowing exactly what?s going on is very important to him. He loves to train and compete. He has a great ability. From day one, he?ll be a guy you?ll take notice of.?

The one good thing about college QBs is they tend to have to stick around till their senior year more than say running backs. Unless they are off the charts phenomenal. So, realistically, we could have Pryor for 4 years. It took Troy 4 years to get there. I think it will take Pryor 4 years to be NFL ready.

Troy came in an athlete turned QB.. there is no doubt where Pryor's true position is.

Troy was a fifth year senior, IIRC, but you make a good point. I think the biggest factor is what year a player starts to get significant playing time. Most QBs don't start until their junior years, some senior. An NFL team is not likely to invest in a QB with only one year of college experience (unless it's the Bengals). A highly recruited RB or WR is more likely to see PT in the first two years, due to the lower learning curve, and platooning. Seeing as TP will likely see some PT this year, and be in a two-horse race for starter next year, he could be NFL ready by the end of his third year. Of course, there are many factors that can have an effect on how long he stays. It would be great to have him for four full years. Stranger things have happened. It seems to be a trend that OSU players want to stay as long as they can.

Lest you forget, Todd Boeckman had 2 TDs and 6 INTs in his last three starts, two of those being losses. If anyone led the Buckeyes, it was Beanie Wells who nearly single-handedly won the Winsconsin and Michigan games. There's a reason why a true freshman will get so many snaps this season...

There's also a reason why talented QB's like Vince Young get redshirted, it's a very difficult position to play. Terrelle will fill a nice role on this team and give us an added dimension that hopefully will help us to where we want to go. Getting him a lot of snaps this season is essential for this teams success in the future, next year especially. I'm confident Boeckman will do a fine job leading this team this year and think he will make a nice improvement from last year like many QB's do in between their first and second year of starting.

Despite all his talent, Terrelle Pryor is driven to learn.


CHICAGO -- Let's see what you're made of, rookie, Malcolm Jenkins thought the other day. Ohio State players were holding an informal seven-on-seven passing drill, and Jenkins, a senior cornerback and world-class trash talker, decided to challenge hotshot freshman quarterback Terrelle Pryor.
"I asked him if he was going to throw me a pick," Jenkins said, breaking into a grin. "And he threw the ball at me every single time. He's not somebody who's going to back down."
Jenkins was only the latest person to experience Pryor's competitiveness, to learn the most important reason why he might make an immediate impact on the Ohio State program in 2008.

Not every recruiting service listed him as a QB. I think Takkle listed him as an ATH rather than a QB. I'm not sure if they really thought that, or were just trying to differentiate themselves from Rivals and Scout.
