COLUMBUS ? When he signed his letter of intent with Ohio State on March 19, Terrelle Pryor was praised as the Buckeyes' quarterback of the future.
The future, apparently, is now.
Pryor will not attend his first college class until Wednesday, Sept. 24, but he is the flavor of the week for coach Jim Tressel in the Buckeyes' surprising quarterback derby.
In the wake of the Buckeyes' 35-3 deconstruction at the hands of top-ranked Southern California last weekend, Tressel came away impressed with Pryor and down on fifth-year senior and second-year starter Todd Boeckman.
He said during preparation for Saturday's game against Troy that Pryor would get most of the snaps with the top offensive unit in practice this week. Boeckman, 14-3 as a starter, is suddenly an afterthought. Joe Bauserman, listed as the backup just two weeks ago, doesn't even figure into the coaches' plans.
Pryor and Boeckman are likely to split duties about evenly against Troy, the second consecutive set of Trojans the Buckeyes have played. Tressel said he did not know who would start.
"It's been about 60-40 with Terrelle getting about 60 percent of the reps," Tressel said Thursday. "As we go into the game after we review today's practice, I think we're still in the thought process that it'll be about equal. ... Both of them are doing pretty good."

Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel rarely says anything at a news conference without a reason. So when he told reporters it was difficult to confer with freshman quarterback Terrelle Pryor between plays "because he was down on the line of scrimmage screaming and yelling at the guys who were playing" and "he's just such an into-it guy," Tressel translators sensed the point.
It likely was a veiled way of pointing out Pryor's leadership ability and style, contrasted with senior starter Todd Boeckman, whose job he now shares.
Also worth noting is how quickly the players have embraced Pryor while maintaining a measure of loyalty to Boeckman. It's a difficult subject for veteran players to address. As Doug Worthington noted, "What do you say? Here's a guy who is a six-year guy. He's your captain."
What do you say? You say this:
"The best guy is going to go out there and the best guy is going to produce," Worthington said. "If Todd goes out there and starts producing more than Terrelle does, then obviously Todd is going to be back in there."

His screen passes are excellent.

That is because he is setting his feet and not throwing on the run. His other throw he looks like a shortstop going into the hole and throwing it to first base. He needs to stop and get his feet set.

Most of his passes were roll-outs. He squared his shoulders and put the ball right between the numbers. I'm sure his footwork is still sloppy when he takes the ball from under center but I didn't see anything wrong in the USC game.

Once Terrell hits a couple passes in the 20+ range it is even going to loosen the Defense up even more. They will have to take the deep ball into account. It will be a totally different game once the Defense knows he can complete the deep ball.

Yeah. This is important that he take his bumps now as a frosh and perfect his passing techniques. Vince Young had very good passing completion % and statistics, but he still had not corrected his throwing motion or other passing problems and therefore still had not become close to as good of a player as he could have become and it certainly shows in the NFL.

If Terrelle can practice and work very hard in the passing department, he will become much more dangerous. Like a Sam Bradford/Vince Young combo. Well i don't know if he can be that good of a passing QB in college, but I'm hopefull.

The mistake coaches at Texas made was not forcing Young to change his mechanics and therefore, even though he was such a freak that he still dominated the college game, he now struggles in the NfL. THankfully I think Tressel will not make this mistake.

Just look at how much more polished a QB Troy Smith became under Tressel once he took over as starter. Let's get to work on Pryor right now, early in his true freshman year, and by the time he's a junior he could be a Troy Smith - Vince Young hybrid.

I agree though, because he will make mistakes, but has unreal potential and fans will ahve to deal with it.

I think if you look at the posted remarks, most of us admitted that there would be mistakes, and were willing to accept them (since they were being made anyway) in order to have the playmaking ability as well.

In regards to "swagger" (I hate that term, BTW), confidence, ego, lwhatever you want to call it - as Sammy Baugh said (and he was certainly no slouch) to succeed you have to feel like you're the best damn sumbitch out there.

Terrelle knows only winning, and I for one don't think he will accept losing. I think he will work as hard as needed, do whatever it takes, do what the coaches tell him, in order to be a winner at tOSU.

OSU has the most overreacting and ridiculous fanbase in college sports and constantly call out players for no real reason.
