Quarterback Terrelle Pryor is way ahead of the learning curve for a rookie playing the most demanding position in football. He has already shown evidence of being a fast learner. How else to explain his rapid rise from third-stringer to starter in less than a month? Or his leadership during the most dramatic moments of last week's victory at Wisconsin?
"The thing that we didn't know, and I don't think anybody could know, was how well and how quickly he would learn the offense," Ohio State quarterbacks coach Joe Daniels said this week as the No. 12 Buckeyes prepared to play Purdue on Saturday. "That's probably the most interesting thing about him. We felt he could throw the ball well, but he's thrown the ball even better than that. But the biggest thing is him learning the offense. It's amazing."

COLUMBUS ? Part of the daily obligations for Ohio State quarterbacks coach Joe Daniels is to manage the psyches of the most important players on the roster. Before he can address throwing motion or footwork, Daniels has to bolster confidence and delicately massage the egos.

Three games into the 2008 season, when the sluggish Buckeyes decided to make a change at quarterback and put freshman Terrelle Pryor in charge of the offense and bench senior Todd Boeckman, Daniels likely cast a vote that was weighted as much as that of head coach Jim Tressel.

Daniels, who has 37 years of coaching on his resume and has been at Ohio State since Tressel took over the program for the 2001 season, has seen Pryor the prodigy seize the opportunity and maintain his composure under duress while still performing at a high level.

?He?s unflappable,? Daniels said this week, speaking with the media for the first time since Ohio State went through preseason workouts, when Boeckman was a returning first-team All-Big Ten pick and the clear-cut starter. It will be Pryor making his fourth straight start for the Buckeyes when they face Purdue in Ohio Stadium tomorrow.

COLUMBUS - Winning was a Brees when Joe Tiller brought his basketball-on-grass mentality to Purdue and the Big Ten in 1997.
As one of the masterminds behind the spread offense, Tiller can see the same thing happening at Ohio State with true freshman Terrelle Pryor that made Purdue a Rose Bowl participant and Drew Brees an All-America quarterback for the Boilermakers en route to NFL stardom.
Back in Ohio Stadium today for the first time since 2003 and last time as a coach, Tiller looks at Pryor and probably rues his decision to put off retirement until after this season.
"I think he has the possibility to be the (poster) child for the Big Ten from here on out, but he's not a child," said Tiller, a Toledo native. "He sure handles himself on the field as if he has great maturity for his age.
"I can't think of a freshman that's played this well. We've had several quarterbacks here, but they didn't play this well. I can't think of anybody in the conference, either - or out of the conference."
In just his third start, Pryor led the Buckeyes 80 yards in the final minutes, scoring on an 11-yard option keeper for a 20-17 victory at Wisconsin. It snapped the Badgers' 16-home game winning streak and was only their second loss in their last 23 night games in Camp Randall Stadium.
Pryor is the only true freshman starting at quarterback for a Top 25 team.

Looking forward to the game today to see how Pryor has progressed after that game winning drive. I really think he could break out stat-wise today and have almost 300 total yards. It'll be a good game gang.

I was just thinking, and I have an analogy that some might get with TP.

When I watch him play, it reminds me of trying to write a paper and wanting to get an A, but every time you type something, you erase it because you don't think it's good enough and instead of just typing something and revising it later, you sit there and stare at your computer.

Eventually though you just say '[censored] it' and write the damn thing and it actaully seems pretty good. THat's where TP is and needs to just play.

THat make any sense?

yeah it does

This game was about the last thing you would want to see from a QB comming off a great win. Personally though, it just looked like more growing pains to me. He doesnt seem to be learning quite as fast on when he needs to act but i have faith he still just needs more time and experience.

I wish JT would design more quick hit passes on up-tempo drives to get pryor throwing. If he cant scare teams with his passing skills they wont be afraid to chew up on his running skills.

He's gotta keep his head up. He's still learning, but the important thing is he continues to learn. He got a W today and that's all that matters. Great job TP. Can't wait to see what you can do against PSU.
