matt hinton is pretty well respected by both internet dorks and legit media guys alike for his football analysis. i don't agree with everything the dude says, but he knows more about football than 99% of the people who generally write for these sites, and he's anything but a troll. i also agree with him, 4.33 is probably not accurate for pryor. the same thing happened with guys from OSU having significantly slower NFL combine times than their own OSU times, and i think it's fair to say that the same thing happened here.

regardless, you all apparently missed the first part of his post where he says

Then perhaps he should try sounding like a well-respected source, and start exemplifying this insight & understanding of the game. He could start by:

a) Adding about a tenth to Pryor's time, like most scouts do that have ever covered or heard about past pro days in Columbus. A 4.43 time for Pryor is quite plausible and not pure fiction as he'd like you to believe.
b) Not referencing Beanie, Jenkins & Robiskie as though those three have any relevance in a speed discussion.
c) Stop pretending that a runner-initiated 40 time and a gun-reacting olympic race have any comparison.
d) Noticing that the lions apparently drafted an inconceivable human specimen who is also an actual gazelle.

That's not what he said. He called it a fake time, referencing the even bigger facade down in Gainesville (according to him).

I'm bashing him because he is trolling. He's using ridiculous, argumentative language to stir up ratings. Is this really worth a major column space, and the front page of an elite website like yahoo? Answer: yes, because it drives in loads of trainwreck traffic. Tons of people have read, linked, mocked, laughed with and yelled at this writer because of how visible Pryor is.

Journalistic integrity is a cute story from days gone by. These days, any visibility is good visibility. This looks like something straight out of cbs sportsline's army of journalistic trolling. If he is as respected as you say he is, then that only makes this tone & word choice even more embarrassing.

If someone stopped by BP and started spewing lines like this, I dare say you'd label him as a troll:

Accusing them of lying and mocking his superhuman abilities... all with the obvious intention of grabbing attention and poking pressure points (whether for pleasure or anger, depending on the fan)

But a legitimate 4.33 at 235 pounds would make him an actual gazelle.

Again, simply looking to stir things up.

A human being of that size moving at that speed is not yet conceivable.

This is by far my favorite line.

Clearly 6'5" 235 at 4.33 is not yet conceivable, considering 2 years ago the NFL combine saw 6'6" 238 lbs blur by with a time of 4.35.

I'm not claiming Pryor's time is comparable to that one. But it's clear the article's purpose was to stir up attention, not offer actual news.

He's giving you only the statistics he wants you to see (like Pat White's surprisingly slow 4.55 40 time), and flat out misrepresenting others. OOOOH, Pat White, he was fast, now I've lost all track of what happened at the last combine. What with Matthew Stafford's blistering 4.81 40 checking in as the 3rd fastest QB time and all. Move along folks, nothing to see there.

Consider that a 4.33 40 is significantly faster than any quarterback has run for the electronic clocks at the NFL Combine in the last four years

2005 - Matt Jones 4.38 (oh wait, that's the time Hinton is trying to hide with his 4 year window).
2006 - Reggie McNeal 4.38, Marcus Vick 4.47, Brad Smith 4.46.

Here I thought there wasn't anyone in that vicinity?

I get how someone would be skeptical of the 4.33. I just have yet to see any of the skeptics reconcile the fact that he posted the fastest time of anyone on the team.

It was tough to discern what was louder ? the whiz of the ball leaving Terrelle Pryor?s hand or the thwack of the pass hitting his receivers. Ohio State?s quarterback is bigger and smarter as the Buckeyes prepare to begin a season that doesn?t have huge expectations, but could lead to them.

Head Coach Jim Tressel held court with the media Tuesday after his Buckeyes wrapped up their second practice this week. Ohio State comes into the season ranked sixth in the USA Today coaches preseason poll.

Whether the Buckeyes climb in the rankings will be determined by two things: A Week 2 game against USC, and if Pryor matures into the quarterback that made him the No. 1 recruit in the country coming out of high school two years ago.

Much is different with these Buckeyes. There will be more learning and more coaching during these mid-August practices. And this is Pryor?s team.

How much different is Pryor than he was a year ago?

?Oh gosh,? Tressel said. ?We were talking (Monday) after practice it was like watching two different people. (Monday) he probably got 40-50 percent of the reps. A year ago, he got maybe 12 percent of the reps, and he didn?t know anything to start with.

Honestly I really don't care what the numbers are...this guy is fast. We all saw that last year when he would run around defenses with ease. I am REALLY excited this year to see the improvements he has made in the off season.

this is what i'm saying. doc saturday is a brilliant blog that every football fan should read, he isn't being sarcastic when he talks about pryor being awesome, and he isn't wrong when he says a 4.33 40 time is probably not the real time at which pryor runs a 40. as he mentions in his post, this isn't him picking on OSU, he's simply pointing out a trend in CFB of people insisting that their players run 40 times that are a lot faster than they really are (florida being the worst offenders).

if you haven't read doc saturday or sunday morning quarterback, you should probably stop reading this thread and get on that before painting hinton as some loon with a vendetta against OSU. you don't like his conclusions? fine. but he's right.

none of this, as hinton himself unsarcastically and unironically points out, detracts in any way from pryor being a beast. it just means that 40 times in CFB are pretty much useless as an indicator of anything valuable.

Didn't care if Pryor is faster than the QB from Baylor, and don't care what his "real" 40 time is. I also don't care how good the guy's blog usually is - this is still pointless. What really matters is whether or not he's faster than the next opponent's defenders - and when it comes to that measure, I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to Pryor.

Can we get some damn games please?! East Podunk A&M vs. BFE State on a Tuesday night - ANYTHING. If there's actual football on we'll have something to pay attention to other than crap like this.

Here is a preparation comparison to appropriately set our expectations for TP taking his game to the next level.

2008

• not in CBUS for spring practice
• not in CBUS for summer 7 on 7 and
• with team for fall practice, receiving 10 to 12% of snaps at QB
• thrown into mix in 2nd game with a game plan etc. designed for a QB with a completely different skill set (i.e. Boeckman)

2009

• with team in spring, worked on his passing so much his arm hurt, and watched countless hours of film...reading defenses etc.
• put on at least 10lbs of muscle while running 4.33
• worked with receivers throughout summer in 7 on 7 drills
• getting 40 to 50% of snaps in the fall
• will have playbook/blocking schemes customized to his skill set
• experienced several big games last year and pressure situations(USC, WISC, PSU, UT)

It is gonna be a fun year fellow buckeye fans.....

I believe Pryor was there for summer 7 on 7s last year. That was when Malcom noted Pryor would come right after him. But, still I think we can expect a big improvement.
