2008 Pro Day
Dispatch
March 5, 2008
Before I get into Pro Day, I was thinking about the difference between following college and pro sports the other day....prompted by the Blue Jackets' trade-deadline moves, when they shipped out two solid veterans for economic reasons.
Can you imagine if the Buckeyes operated under such a system?
"Gee, we just lost to Illinois. We have no shot at winning a national title now, and the trade deadline is Tuesday. Malcolm Jenkins and James Laurinaitis are probably going to leave after this season, anyway, so let's trade them and get something in return, at least...."
Sorry, just a tangent. The college system has its problems, too, but at least worrying about contracts isn't one of them.

Couldn't agree more. This is one of the big reasons I've strayed away from NFL fandom in recent years. I get so tired of the moments that remind me of the book 1984. Big Brother changes the signs at the rally, and the masses are expected to alter their friend and enemy list accordingly and without question. The most recent example was when Jammal Lewis came to Cleveland. Browns fans could not stand him in Baltimore. Yet, put an orange & brown jersey on him, and they cheered with no problem.
I LOVE college football, even with its shortcomings.

Football: Buckeyes have a last chance to strut stuff
Seven players hope to catch NFL's eye
Friday, March 7, 2008 3:08 AM
By Ken Gordon
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH - Pro prospects
- Seven Ohio State players will work out today for NFL scouts:
- Kirk Barton, OL
- Vernon Gholston, DE
- Larry Grant, LB
- Jackson Haas, LS
- Dionte Johnson, FB
- Trever Robinson, FB
- Tyler Whaley, FB
According to Dionte Johnson, the death of the NFL fullback has been greatly exaggerated. At least he hopes so. Johnson, a fullback, is one of seven former Ohio State players who will work out for scouts today at the school's annual pro day.
Only three of those were invited to the NFL combine in February -- defensive end Vernon Gholston, offensive tackle Kirk Barton and linebacker Larry Grant. As their only chance to make an impression, today's workout is critical for Johnson and the others.
"I'm more anxious than nervous," he said. "I've been waiting to show (scouts) for a while. This is a huge day for me, and a long time coming."
Though there are fewer Buckeyes working out today than in the past, a crowd of scouts is still expected, mainly because Gholston is projected as a top-10 draft pick.

Scout $-- Barton Pleased With Pro Day Showing
Vernon Gholston, Kirk Barton, and Larry Grant all performed well today and improved their stock.
Barton went sub 5 secs in the 40 and Vern recorded a 42 inch vertical.
Erik Haw returned to run for the scouts.
