Need the measurements for the helmet design.
I am making a going away plaque for our old 1st Lt and I am painting it to match the helmet design. I have all the paints and obviously know what the design looks like, but I need a proper ratio of the colors.
Can anyone measure their novelty or real helmet and tell me the measurements of each color? How wide is the black bar? White? Red? Your help is appreciated. The going away is Friday and I have to etch the plaque tomorrow. SSgt Barker *EDIT* Here is the picture... ![]() This is the base coats. I need to start masking it off and doing the bars next. |

I ended up counting the pixels in a photo that was fairly head on.
My best guess is that the black bars are 1/2 the whites bars which are 1/2 the red bar. For example: Black 1/4 White 1/2 Red 1 Anyone have more exact measurements? |

You have to do the stripe in proportion to the size of the piece of wood.
The 1" to 1/2" to 1/4" ratio's are correct but a stripe the exact size as that on a helmet will look too skinny on a 6ft wide table or wall or whatever. FYI on a mini helmet I have on hand: circumference: 12 1/2" red stripe: 1/2" white: 1/4" black: 1/8" so lets say that table is 4ft wide red: 4" white 1"(each) black 1/2"(each) anyway thats what I remember from almost painting a helmet stripe on the walls in my office. Its late and my math could be off so check me. Hope it helps. |

I can see how that would look like a table. It is actually a 19" aluminum cover plate. I ended up going 3" Red, 1 1/2" white, and 3/4" black. It looks pretty good.
I'll post up some finished picks tomorrow. |

Cool... now maybe a stripe on the garage door... or down the roof. You know, as long as the supplies are at hand.

Man that looks great... I know how painful it can be to paint a stripe like that.... I did that stripe all around my basement... Took forever and about a million dollars in painters tape...hahah
It was hard to get the exact ratio of the stripe. I was able to find a picture of a real helmet on google images and measured from there to get the ratios right. Awesome work on your piece.. I am sure he is going to love it. I used similar ratios for this work Black 1/4<<<Actual 1/6 of red stripe White 1/2<<< Actual 3/8 of red stripe Red 1<<<< 1/12 of wall size so 12' wall would mean 1' stripe ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by craigblitz; 03-28-2008 at 09:07 AM. |

Sorry this took so long guys. TDYs and a crazy schedule at work have kept me busy.
Here are some poor quality photos taken at Hooters, at night, when I finally got the plaque to him. I know they are huge, but I didn't want to have any detail missing for you guys. ![]() ![]() |
