Versatile Christian Bryant within Spartans' grasp



For almost a decade now, Cleveland Glenville High School has stood as one of the most fertile talent hotbeds in the country. Over that same period, one program -- Ohio State -- has harvested the best of that talent. Many challengers have attempted to outduel the Buckeyes for the likes of former Glenville greats like Ted Ginn Jr., Donte Whitner and current OSU standout Jermale Hines, but most have gone home disappointed. This year that run of dominance could finally end, and Michigan State could be the team playing the role of spoiler.

The Spartans are currently in strong shape for Glenville's jack-of-all-trades star, Christian Bryant. The 5-foot-10, 175-pounder is one of the most talented and versatile athletes in the Buckeye State. That much was confirmed during an impressive showing against a talented Huber Heights (Ohio) Wayne team last month. Wayne features future Michigan Wolverine cornerback Terrence Talbott and defensive tackle Terry Talbott, along with highly-coveted junior quarterback Braxton Miller. Bryant stole the show that day, rushing for 100 yards on 12 carries from his quarterback position, throwing for 129 yards on 6-of-10 passing, kicking a field goal, and returning an interception 82 yards for one of his three touchdowns. That was par for the course for a youngster that was one of the elite performers a few months prior at ESPN Rise Gridiron Kings 7-on-7 competition in Orlando.

"His teammate (on his squad in Orlando) and in high school, safety Latwan Anderson, won defensive MVP. While it was close, I thought it was actually Bryant who had the best day," said Scout.com Midwest analyst Allen Trieu. "(Bryant) did not allow a single completion and it was not for lack of effort on the other teams' parts. They threw at him some, but he broke up several passes and had tight coverage all day. He made a huge play late in one game where he jumped a short pass, picked it off and returned it for a touchdown. I loved his competitive attitude and his coverage skills. He is already rated pretty high, but I came away thinking he was still underrated."

Cute article, but still not believing that he won't be in S&G next year! Dantonio's doing some special things at MSU, but we've still got Glenville on lock. Bryant's a baller, does anyone see him getting any PT next year, at least on special teams?

Hate to be a Cassandra here, but even if the pipeline keeps flowing it will dry up if left untended. Ted Ginn Sr is a powerful force in these young men's lives, but they still go their own way. Yes, OSU has been good to these kids, and that's the basis for the pipeline. However, Tress & Co needs to water, feed, and care for this Glenville garden. without the analogies, they need to woo these kids just like they do everyone else.

There will come a time (or another time, remember Pierre Wood?) where a Glenville kid strays, and is sorry for it. And OSU cannot take all of the Glenville kids anywho.......

At the end of the day, if the young man thinks that MSU is the best fit for him, then I'd say go for it......and don't go to OSU and hate your time there....just my thoughts.

and if they go to MSU, doesn't that mean that Michigan will suck even further? Errrrrr, sink even further?

Approach differs for neutral-site games

Lamarcus Joyner ate it up when he was in Columbus, Ohio, on Sept. 12 for the USC-Ohio State game. Ditto for the Oct. 14 USC-Notre Dame game in South Bend, Ind.

"I had a good time at both," said the high school defensive back/return man extraordinaire.

So when two more of the top-flight college programs recruiting him meet Saturday, the top-rated cornerback in the ESPNU 150 will be there as Georgia and Florida knock heads. Well, sort of.

Joyner doesn't do neutral-site "official" recruiting visits, in part because the NCAA doesn't permit them, and Florida-Georgia is played in Jacksonville, Fla. So he'll watch on TV. "I have to watch," said the St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) star. "Got to see how the teams play it, how I might fit in."

Neutral-site games rarely fit into recruiting plans.

Glenville duo has mixed reviews for MSU

Bryant, who is rated a four-star prospect and the No. 10 cornerback in the nation by Rivals.com, thoroughly enjoyed his time in East Lansing and gave the visit high marks.

"Michigan State, I really like it up there," Bryant told SpartanMag.com?s Paul Day. "This is the second time I went up there, and I just felt like it was a great place, a great overall place. I saw how much fun the players have, how intense they get before the game and everything, and the overall environment was a great place to be in that particular night. So it really helped Michigan State's chances."

Bryant is also looking closely at Tennessee and Ohio State. He is expected to visit Ohio State in December and a decision will come shortly afterward.

This is the best Glenville team he's been on and they're looking forward to the playoffs so they can prove the doubters wrong. He had a great time at MSU and thinks he could be successful if he went there. Other 3 schools of interest include: UNC (followed basketball as a kid), Tennessee (former teammate, coaches w/ NFL experience), & Ohio State (familiarity, tradition). Commitment timetable for around the 1st of the year.

Bryant is getting a good feeling from the UNC coaches and hopes to visit on 12/18. Most of their DBs are juniors so he'll have an opportunity in a year. Is leaning towards Tennessee and West Virginia for his last 2 OVs.
