If not in first place, then who would be ranked ahead of them? How many games would they win in 2008 with a full SEC schedule - take LSU's schedule for example:
App St.
Troy
N. Texas
Auburn
Miss. St.
Florida
South Carolina
Georgia
Tulane
Alabama
Ole Miss
Arkansas

where would tOSU fit preseason? id go with #2 behind georgia. with the way they ended the year and the number of starters they have coming back i think they deserve to be #1. how do i think tOSU would fair with that schedule? really well actually. we return nearly our entire team and for the first time since 05, we actually have more than a handful of seniors on the field. looking at this schedule, if we get past georgia there is a real good chance we go undefeated. but i could see as many as 2 losses if the ball doesn't bounce our way. maybe 3.

i agree completely. if i am remembering correctly both florida in 06 and lsu in 07 had serious injury problems. with that in mind its hard to say who we loose too either season. so depending on the schedule and when we ended up playing certain teams would have a direct impact on our odds of winning out. but i truly believe that either in 06 or in 07 we would have lost atleast 1. if i were a betting man i would put my money on 07. not because i think 07 lsu was better than 06 florida. but rather because i don't think 07 tOSU was near as mature as 06 tOSU. i think last years team was about on par with 06 talent wise. but we were really weak on senior leadership on the field.
and just for the record, we are going for our 3rd straight undisputed big 10 title and 4th straight title period. in 05 we lost to both texas and penn state. penn state won the big 10 because they won head to head with us. we get to claim it because we had the same conference record (psu lost to scum). i have a hard time claiming that title. alot of people would counter with the "conference champ game" argument. but i think that is a flawed argument at best. if we play penn state again in 05 and win... what does that prove? we're 1-1 against penn state. so... whose the champ?

i believe they could, yes. do you think they are incapable of beating georgia, florida, auburn, or alabama?

guarded optimism. 09 has all the markings of a rebuild year. but we could get lucking and the young guys might really take off. we have as much talent as anyone. but with the youth... its hard to predict. my personal feeling is that we will be in the running for the big 10. as far as whether or not we win it depends largely on how other teams progress this year. penn state has a new qb, wisky is maturing nicely, scum lite is looking better every year, illi is recruiting real well, and who the hell knows what will happen with scum in 2 years under dickrod. its very possible 09 will be a replay of 04 where we dropped 4 conference games. i don't think that will happen, but it is possible.
but, in all reality we all had the same doubts about last years team. last year WAS a rebuild year. we lost count em
9 starters on d in 05. our 06 team had 2 returning starters on d. period. 06 was partly surprising because as a team we had a great offense, but a really talented yet extremely young defense. in 07 we were a team with a very talented yet still pretty green defense that had lost every single skill player on offense. tOSU was picked to finish
3RD in the big ten in 07. us making it to the nc game was a freak occurrence that i can't imagine happening any year not 07.
so while there is good reason to be optimistic, i expect there to e a lot of unknowns going into the 09 season.

do me a favor, tell me how many teams tOSU has beat by 31 points in the tressel era. let alone scored 31 unanswered.

oh like hell it does! you just said so yourself! until we beat the best sec team in a "big" bcs bowl and in doing so score 31+ unanswered we deserve no respect. now, seeing as how you said "big" bcs bowl and seeing as how there are 5 of them. one naturally must assume you mean the nc game because well, the other 4 are pretty much the same at this point. you do realize that making it to the nc game isn't a gimmie right? it might be another 50 years before we find our way to another nc game.
people can whine bitch and moan about how we went to the nc game after playing a crap schedule all they want. and ya know what? their absolutely right, our schedule turned out to be pretty weak all things considered. but if THEIR team hadn't choked so [censored]ing bad when they got the opportunity to be #1 or #2 maybe they would actually have something to complain about. its not like tOSU was picked over 3 undefeated teams. just about everyone in college football had their shot at the crown. every single one of them INCLUDING tOSU and lsu balked hard.
