personally im predicting an 05 offense. tp will get his share of runing plays. but it will certainly be fewer than last year. probably about half as many attempts as he had last year.

not sure i entirely agree with you on the arm bit. how much time did you spend watching troy smith throw the ball as a true freshman? i personally have been very impressed with tp's arm. the kid has tremendous power for someone with such horrible technique. i really think people discredit his throwing ability because of the # of passes he put up that were straight out of a friday night game. to those persons i would strongly recommend giving him a year or 2 to learn how to throw the ball properly. once he starts throwing from his feet up... look out.

No one is saying we recruited him to stick him in the pocket and lock him there. We recruited him because his freakish athleticism will allow him to improvise if need be, unlike virtually all other QBs. It also allows us to open the play book more, further keeping the defenses off balance. We did not recruit him to be a running QB. Keep in mind that Pryor isn't playing against high school competition anymore, where he could run just about anytime he wanted to and get away with it.

As far as his "not having Troy's arm", if you're referring to arm strength, you may want to rethink...

I'll be very happy with a passing efficiency of at least 160, and over 500 rushing yards. 30 Combined TD's would do nicely.

Big numbers in passing yardage don't equate to more wins.

while i think he will make a massive stride forward this year. i think his efficiency will drop below 140. with all the new faces i think the offense is going to operate a lot like it did last year. occasional moments of sheer brilliance sandwiched inbetween inconsistency and foolish mental mistakes.

Rushing total stays around the same. Two more rushing TDs. 700 more passing yards, and he continues to improve his already remarkable ability to throw TDs in the red zone.

Remember Pryor ran for right around 500 without having a total grasp of the offense. I think Pryor was so hell bent on proving everyone he can pass that he often times didn't scramble when he knows he should've. I think we'll see a lot more taking off when he knows somethings not there. I also look for him to be much more decisive when he's running the ball. At times he tip toed last year and went down, but as the season went on he really did a nice job of going full speed through a lane.

His numbers running wise could go up or down depending on how you think. I mean he may run for less due to the fact that he'll be a better passer, but I think BOTH numbers will benefit from more experience.

I don't think that's expecting too much. If you're counting the bowl game, and taking the top end of your ranges, that averages 60 yds/game rushing and 175 yds/game passing. Totally plausible that he meets or exceeds that. I think he'll probably exceed it, as those are decent, but certainly not exceptionally strong numbers.

It just struck me when I looked at the title of this thread that there really isn't much to discuss when it comes to the 2009 QB situation. All of the discussion here would actually fit better in the Pryor thread or in the 2009 Offense thread. Feel free to keep the discussion going here though. It isn't really possible to make a valid, on-topic point in a thread with the title that this one has. Even speculation about a season changing injury would belong in the TP thread.

It was just 3 years ago when we had nothing to talk about w.r.t. the qb position. It's good to be a Buckeye.

Anyone else think Kenny Guiton has a chance to be a starter down the line if we move more towards a spread offense, which seems likely, instead of just a benchwarmer who provides depth? I think he'd be a better spread QB than Bauserman and he'll have a year on the 2010 QB(Montana or whomever) and two on Miller. He is very similar to Dennis Dixon coming out of high school which is probably the main reason for my optimism.

Dispatch beat reporters Tim May and Ken Gordon will analyze each position group on the Ohio State football team through spring practice. Today:

Quarterback
? Key loss: Todd Boeckman

? Key returnees: Terrelle Pryor, Joe Bauserman, walk-on Ross Oltorik

? Time to step up: All of the above, plus spring walk-on Justin Siems and 2009 recruit Kenny Guiton Jr.

? What it was: It was supposed to be Boeckman's year in 2008 with splashes by a young Pryor. From Game 4, it was Pryor's job, and the offense was tapered accordingly. But a rally in the Fiesta Bowl loss to Texas was a product of Boeckman and Pryor playing at the same time.

? What it might be: If Pryor's proficiency in the passing game improves, the sky is the limit because his running has no peer among Big Ten quarterbacks. Bauserman has looked sharp at times this spring, and Siems has been a surprise. Oltorik is playing his No. 1 sport, baseball, this spring.

? What they're saying: Coach Jim Tressel said spring would provide Pryor "the chance to have his feet on the ground, and he will be able to really emerge because he's not playing catch-up all the time. He's got to work hard on his footwork, hard on his film study, and he's got to work hard on what we talk about with all of our quarterbacks, which is gaining a command of the situation."

As open practices and interview sessions proceed at a dizzying pace, I barely have time to clear one day's tapes before another begins, but as the famous ad campaign states: I'm lovin' it.

So, here are some out-takes from yesterday's quarterback interviews, featuring Terrelle Pryor and Joe Bauserman.

-- First off, it's BAW-zerman, not BOW-zerman. Joe's parents told me that last year, it's a localized pronunciation from Joe's home region, the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, Virginia.

-- You couldn't get a more low-keyed contrasting personality to Pryor's youthful brashness than Bauserman's "wise old man" persona. Yet you get the feeling that underneath the calm, he's wickedly funny.

Asked if his arm was strong enough to make all the throws: "Yeah, well I think any quarterback is going to say that they can make every throw, because if you can't make every throw then you can't be a great quarterback."

He paused, almost for comic effect, than said, "So yeah, I feel I can make every throw."

-- As has been reported multiple places over the past few months, Bauserman said he never thought about leaving Ohio State. I found his attitude refreshing, that's it's not all about chasing playing time.

Asked if he felt he could have played more somewhere else, he said, "You can do that with a lot of things, the `what-ifs' and stuff," he said. "What if I stayed with baseball? What if I never came to Ohio State? It's just a what-if game, and you can't play those types of games with yourself."
